I'm responding specifically to people saying 'there's no point' buying good players while Arteta is here.

Agree with Goon there, there is however no point in letting Arteta make controversial transfer decisions like giving Xhaka a new contract. In short, while he's here his responsibility should be limited to coaching rather than the manager "promotion" he got.

I think people fear that the next manager will discard all of them and rebuild again tbf.

Although that hardly happens, most manager works with what they have, except Mikel who really need specific players just to succeed to even the next level

Edu should at the very least have the final say, but given he's the one who supposedly recommended Willian that wouldn't fill me with much confidence either.

Anyway, I don't feel like you can really go wrong with someone like Maddison.

Willian was pretty good before he came here and he was also considered to be a professional compared to some other Brazilian flair players. Not going to beat Edu up over that one, in fact most of his buys were decent. The problem with him (and a general issue with the club) is it's unclear how far his responsbilities go. In theory Arteta should be reporting to him but it sure doesn't seem that way. Edu joined us summer 19, six months before Arteta did and like a month before we signed Saliba. Yet about half the signings he made are centre backs, definitely reeks of a Wenger-Gazidis relationship where Arteta tells Edu what to do rather than the other way round.

Willian was personally requested by Arteta. No 2 ways about it. Willian has said as much and Arteta too.

Edu allegedly offered Willian up as a potential signing before Arteta was even appointed apparently, as far back as Oct/Nov 2019. I can't remember who reported this but I think it was Ornstein.

edit: yup, it was on the Athletic. He originally recommended him to Emery and then again with Arteta (who was very keen as you say).

I wonder if you sat Arteta and Edu in separate interrogation rooms, would either confess that signing Willian was their choice?

I think Raul it was bad news for, not Edu. He was suddenly the bloke without a role at the club.

Correct and IIRC Arteta wasn't promoted to Manager for another couple of weeks, by which time our purge and rebuild had disappeared into a black hole.

Maybe when it became official but Arteta said in press conferences that he was speaking directly to the owners, something Raul apparently didn't like much and felt all communication should go through him. There were stories about this at the time. A few months later Raul was gone. Aside from all the shoddy deals and the less than stellar results I think he was pretty much done for the moment he wasn't the Kroenkes go-to guy anymore. Seems obvious in hindsight that he was sacked to pave way for a different structure.

You'd have think that was a bit of a mistake. For all Rauls faults he's much better at getting deals done. If he's shady fine move him on but we needed a replacement.

Does he actually shop people around or just deal with contracts, etc? If he's responsible for selling people he's had a very poor first summer so far.
