Özil was near useless, as was Mustafi, that's why they were pushed out - they were international players not getting near the team because they were crap and they had to go. Guendouzi had such value he went to Hertha Berlin last summer when anyone could have bid for him, and went to Marseille this summer when he was available for an apparent bargain. And we spent big money on Ben White because Arteta clearly thinks he's excellent.

These things are not the same as Xhaka because he is not totally useless and Roma are not offering £15m.

Whilst I would do something different re Xhaka, all I'm saying is it seems to make sense for the club to extend his contract, protect any value he does have or might potentially have, and keep him happy, if he's going to stay because Roma are skint and taking the piss, which we both know they undoubtedly are.

Guendouzi went to Berlin last season because he was publicly slammed and banished. He's gone to Marseille for similar reasons. I'm not sure how else you're supposed to explain that he went from being linked with a move back to PSG after his move from Lorient and after his first year with Emery and who's now shown out the backdoor to second rate clubs.

Xhaka a) has two years on his contract left and most importantly b) turns 29 in a month from now. If he were 24 I'd understand the decision to extend just like I would've understood it if we had done it with Guendouzi whose contract runs out at the same time. You want Xhaka gone yourself, so why does it make sense to extend with a player who shouldn't be at the club at a moment when there's interest in him now? Do you really believe clubs will be lining up to pay that much more for him in a year from now when he's almost 30?

This has nothing to do with any valuation of Roma as Clrnc says Arteta doesn't care about stuff like that, there's no way we're getting more for Xhaka than now unless an English club bids for him in a year. This is Arteta clearly rating Xhaka and wanting him to be a starter for us, any judgment of this decision should be on that basis alone and not a prospective move in a year's time.

To be honest, if Arteta keeps Xhaka and uses him significantly, then he only has himself to blame.

I would rather roll the dice on Azeez, than roll out Elneny and Xhaka again. We need to make the hard choices and decisions.

If we still sign Guimaraes, then at least it pushes everyone down a spot which would help, but if we do not sign a CM/DM because of this latest Xhaka decision, then it would show a severe lack of leadership and a failure to execute the ideas Arteta should have in his mind for his playing style.

We were happy to let him talk to Roma, they couldn't stump up the requested fee, so that route out has closed for now.

At the same time, as a fanbase, we complain about not extracting enough value for our players, yet complain when we refuse to let Xhaka go for cheap. I don't think we can have it both ways.

As said elsewhere, I want to see the back of Xhaka as much as anyone else but if Roma are not prepared to pay a very reasonable price for him, then I don't think we should agree to it.

It's the implications of resigning him that are worrying. As ohboy!!! said if we're still signing a midfielder to start it means Xhaka is now a backup, that's not bad. But if you consider that Xhaka probably wouldn't get a new improved contract to be a backup, nevermind sign one, then you're looking at us choosing not to sign a new starting CM and instead continuing with a player we were trying to offload only a few days ago because we thought the bid from Roma was 5m or something too low. If you think that people who complain about extracting value need to be happy with that then I respectfully disagree.

That's pretty much it. If he stays he stays and if all you're being offered is €12m then it's probably better off keeping him, but giving him a new (improved) 4 year deal at 29 is seriously questionable decision making. It's not even questionable actually, it's downright moronic.

I reckon Arteta is one of those guys that thinks he's decisive and ruthless but in reality he probably doubts himself constantly, and Xhaka is the ultimate security blanket.

None of the points you mentioned here are what people is unhappy about.

I think it's clear that we are offering him an improved wage and 5 year deal, that is the worrying part. Klaus and Jones have mentioned enough points up there, this move doesn't make sense whatsoever. Neither is the Bellerin one.

Thinking back, thank fuck Mustafi rejected our contract offer and chose to leave on a free. Our decisions are really weird af.

So we either extract enough value or we're stuck with poor or unsuitable players? I'm pretty sure we can have it both ways.

You make a decision like that with a guy like Guendouzi, loan him out with a high buying option and extend his contract if you can't get good value for him now. You don't make that decision by extending a guy and making him central to our play because Roma can't stump up another 10m or so, how does that make even sense to make a call that's so central to the way we play hinge on a couple million which don't even move the needle for us anyway.

This makes perfect sense when you also consider that Arteta is incompetent.

aye, if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck. it's a bitter pill to swallow, which is why I think some people are still hanging onto some hope based on I don't know what. edu and arteta have made a string of dodgy decisions, and renewing xhaka is just the latest. our rebuild needed to be overseen by a deft hand, but we've handed it to a pair of amateurs who are arguably exacerbating the situation

Whilst extending Xhaka's contact is far from ideal, I can see the logic behind it. I don't think that it means we won't sell him outside of this window or that we're not planning on replacing him though.

And again, I think there's still the possibility that we're using this as a negotiation tactic to force Roma's hand.

I can't see the big picture here personally. I think the simplest explanation is they decided €12m isn't worth losing him over, and I think the contract is far more likely an attempt to persuade the player that he's wanted here and to get him onside rather than push through a move to Roma.

I can't see this not having negative consequences elsewhere with other decisions, but lets see.

If we give him a new contract with bigger wages, good luck selling him then. We can't do it now when we are asking for 20 mil(not all up front). 3 clubs showed interest in the guy in 5 years, Roma(at 12 mil), Herta Berlin & the mighty Steve Bruce's Newcastle. We extend, he is here until his contract runs out, nobody is buying him. Oh, also he is 29, if we give him a long contract...it's gonna be fun.

The only way I can disagree with you is if this is just positioning to try and force Roma's hand or to flush out any other interested bidders, but with the bumbling duo at the helm, more likely than not that you are absolutely right. A smart DoF would have used Xhaka, Torreira, Lacazette, Bellerin and Holding and got at least 2 good players in exchange, but the morons running our club will probably let them all go on frees eventually after costing us for the next 5 years.

This summers business feels like it's on a knife edge. Feels like it could go very wrong, especially with the links to the likes of Tammy and Ramsdale while a whole host of players who should be gone could end up remaining. Already feels like THE most important position going into the summer is going to be left un-addressed.

We need Maddison plus one more first XI player somewhere on the pitch to really move the needle. Praying to the gods it's a centre mid but if not then hopefully a right back or a top class centre forward.

Seriously none of those would make a difference for next season with Arteta in charge, any signing we make should be for the next manager / season.

Yeah, am struggling to get excited by anything we do this summer because Arteta is still in-charge. The football is not going to magically improve. The style we play, is the style we play and that's not going to change so there's no point getting my hopes up about anything. Regardless of who we sign we're in for another season of being in bottom 5 for shots on target, passes in the box etc. I fucking hate Arteta, the useless cunt.

That Arteta's tactics are dull and turgid are all the more reason to have top quality players in there. Just look at the difference a 20yr old from the academy made when he was introduced into the side.

With Leno in goal, there is no way we should be addressing the GK position right now.

We need a CM/DM, AM, and a RB, all starting quality.

A striker is important, but should be after all the other positions.

Really being mismanaged at the moment
