Maybe Arsenal are a poisoned chalice now in the same way the United were (are?)...
I don't think so. Moyes took over from Fergie who went only because he retired. United were still on top, had just won the league, etc There was always going to be a bit of a malaise there and high expectations.
Yeah, most of their board including their DOF left at the same time as Ferguson too, and they had a squad that had the highest age average in the league I think. Just lots of old and used up players that symbolised how Ferguson had failed to reinvigorate the squad. All that was ignored because he had just gotten one last unexpected great season out of his aging squad. Even if he had stayed it would have been a bad follow-up season for United I reckon.
Moyes is obviously not as good as Ferguson, lacked experience to deal with a club and players on that level, and played a bit shit football from an entertainment POV to boot so he got the fans against him fairly early. I don't really think he would have succeeded there regardless, but you could see the struggle coming from a mile away. At Arsenal no one had any expectations to deal with after Emery and Raul almost tanked the club by contrast, and we've still managed to disappoint, the FA cup aside.
