i think the CL should be pruned down drastically.

league winner and runners up from the 6 biggest leagues (england, germany, france, spain, italy, portugal) = 12 teams
champs from the next 5 leagues (netherlands, austria, scotland, serbia, belgium) = 5 teams

august playoff round for league winners from the next 8 leagues (ukraine, switzerland, greece, czech republic, croatia, denmark, turkey, norway) = 1 team advances
current champion = 1 team
previous year's europa league winner = 1 team

that would be 20 teams total. the 6 top league champions, plus the holder and the runner up, plus the league runners up from the two leagues with the highest coefficient into group a. the next 4 league runners up, plus the 5 champs from the 2nd tier leagues, plus the one team that survived the playin go in group b.

do a random draw where each team in group A plays 5 matches against other group A teams, and 5 matches against group B teams. 10 total matches played, 5 home and 5 away.

the 4 teams that have the highest totals after the 10 group games advance to a 2 leg semi, and then play the final as a single leg. this gets rid of the round of 32, round of 16 and round of 8. it makes consistent performance in the group stage actually meaningful. if they think giving up 3 rounds of knockout games is too much, then expand it and play 16 matches in the group stage instead of 10, and spread it out from september through april, with the semis and final in may.

any team that doesnt make it into the champions league field of 20 go into the europa league. and no more dropping from the CL into the europa league bullshit.

theres no reason that a separate "super league" run by UEFA can't be set up and run in parallel to domestic leagues. how many people are truly riveted by group games between huge teams and minnows from the 47th ranked european country? for every sheriff tiraspol upset over real madrid, there are 1000 instances of a 5-0 drubbing.

Never understood what's so bad about a big team facing a minnow even if the result is often already known. Fans of Tiraspol or whoever wait for that match their whole lives while big teams facing each other with little on the line devalues the whole thing.

It's extremely commercialised and often reinforces the status quo but I honestly don't think there's that big a need for tinkering with the format as it is (now, not the 2024 version)

European football needs a crisper and simpler design with two divisions in my opinion.

Make the trajectories interesting by having clubs qualify from their leagues into the lower division, and if relegated from the lower division sitting out of Europe for at least a season or otherwise until they requalify.

Likewise have the top of the second division swap with the bottom of the first.

Might sound a bit like it promotes incumbency, but the mid season European relegation fights would make for enthralling conditions, and the penalty of a season's exclusion for relegated clubs would lead to unexpected challengers down the table entering and having the chance to prosper.

Ten matches played after which two thirds of the whole competition effectively proceeds to knockout is a joke.

From a purely competition point of view blocking the Super League is UEFA abusing their monopoly. Now that doesn't mean in the long term this could have a negative impact on Football but it isn't right for UEFA to be able to call the shots and decide what is and isn't allowed.

Wonder what the PL clubs do now, they took a lot of heat last time so might lay low for now. If the money is worth it I think they'd revisit it, though I do remember Wenger talking about this. Saying the reason for the Super League is so those European clubs could gain parity with the PL clubs, so he didn't understand why the PL clubs would want that. The top Spanish and Italian Clubs have fucked over their own league by hoarding a lot of the revenue and fucked themselves over which is why their league do not generate anywhere the numbers of the PL.

There seemed to be a pretty resounding 'no' from fan groups last time so debatable whether this would still be a hurdle that clubs would need to overcome. Would like to think that at the very least most clubs would be a lot more cautious about making such a move after the reaction last time.

Given the politics and all the money, UEFA are bound to do their best to convert the existing CL into a de facto European super league halfway by stealth rather than lose control of it all, aren't they ... they'll probably fuck it up so badly the players go on strike the way this new setup looks ...

I think this is wrong and ironically enough very un-conservative. Why the hell would you want to give organisations like FIFA, UEFA and the FA this kind of control? Your basically handing them over the keys to the monopoly and letting them dictate to clubs the rules.

I don't think clubs should form this super league but I also don't think it is right to prevent clubs having a bargaining chip. Why the fuck the government are even getting involved is beyond me.

Football clubs are important to European culture from grass roots right the way up to the big clubs. Governments should absolutely be protecting fans from greedy owners who only want to line their own pockets or launder their reputations. This super league would be terrible for fans, it'd be a very American system and everything thats wrong with American sport would follow. Insane ticket prices, clubs moving city, etc Nothing would trickle down to the grass roots either. It'd destroy the fabric of the game right across the continent.

Qwiss this totally, people get angry about government getting involved but no problem a private company with literally no accountability deciding what happens. It's similar to the social media rise, nobody wants government with oversight having access to personal information and data but a faceless corporation sign me up and we all know how that ended.

If you aren't a fan of the government getting involved that's fair but never trust the private sector to do t right thing because that is literally bottom of their priorities. The aim of this league we'll be to remove those clubs from their roots and lock out all other clubs from ever being involved. It would be the end of my interest in football in the same way personally.

Doesn't look like the Super League will be interfering with much other than a few beers now it's lined up the FAs, UEFA and a few belligerent nation states against it.

If it was absolutely inevitable I'd want Arsenal to be part of it, but it'll be better for the world if the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga et al. don't get converted into glorified versions of the Championship.

awooga83 sorry, that’s not the aim. They don’t want to create a breakaway NFL style league. They want a league that sits on top of existing leagues so they can enjoy existing domestic revenue streams and then extract these super league rents on top.

And they know that European law is much more supportive of competition than US law that accommodates cartels. It will encourage a super league by saying clubs should be free to participate under different competitions.

The current stricture has failed to create pan European affluence. So I don’t see the strong arguments for keeping it without the necessary league-by-league overhauls and an actual coordination amongst FIFA, confederations and FAs instead of a scramble for players’ bodies

I don't understand what you mean, here. What is pan European affluence and why is it needed?
