Imagine I can buy a pair of trainers to run over a path of hot coals, but I choose to run barefoot, then make it half-way before collapsing. You could say I overachieved based on what I had, but also say I was foolish to put myself in that position, so therefore not deserving of much credit or sympathy.

Nah, there is simply no arguments for "overachieving". He is already running over hot coals with his pair of trainers and is still collapsing.

What is worse is that many teams around him removed hot coals for him to make it easier.

This squad was not good enough for top 4 in September, then we went and weakened it in January.

To get top 4 would have been a massive overachievement, just look at our predictions at the start of the season.

However, I am not defending Edu and Arteta. They deserve criticism and possibly sacking for putting us in the position of having such an undercooked squad in the first place, and Arteta deserves serious heat for the seemingly devastating collapse. Because despite the argument of overachieving, expectations change based on results. If we finish way off Spurs in 4th, then the final 2 months of the season will also be a massive underachievement.

If we finish 6th or lower I'll want them both to fuck off.

If we finish 5th I'll reluctantly take it but it's caveated by how we perform in general in our remaining matches.

I may be repetitive but there surely must be a minimum expectation regarding when we will reach top 4 again. If we fail this season and Arteta stays, that means that we are willing to give this coach at least four seasons to achieve that goal, maybe even more.

For me, it's madness. Maybe for others it makes sense.

Top four was always going to require a big effort because our only bonafide goal scorers going into the season have, rightly or wrongly, been sold or put on the fringes. It’s why I was bricking it before Palace despite many on here being so certain of a top four finish. Goals are king and most of ours are locked away in potential while Spurs have two of the most potent guys in the country. They were garbage against Newcastle for most of the game and won 5-0.

Speak for yourself there. I can't believe we're even in the conversation. We haven't done enough to rebuild this team and on top of that, we've considerably weakened ourselves. Arteta gas to get both the credit and the blame, while Edu and co continue to underwhelm.

we've spent like half a billion pounds on transfers in the last 2 years under arteta. maybe the problem is its been spent poorly, because arteta has completely fucked up our attacking options and left us with just lacazette, who is way past it, and a guy who is free to leave this summer. maybe spending £50m on ben white and loaning out a comparable talent we already had on the books wasnt the best use of our resources

im just asking at what point the excuses stop for arteta. his biggest fluffers have been going on and on about how he inherited the worst squad in premier league history (which isnt true at all) and how the squad isnt good enough. we've now had 2 summers of spending shedloads of money on the squad, and yet the squad still isnt good enough to compete for the top 4. how much more money does he need to be given to waste? another £500m? if we buy mbappe and pedri this summer, would we be expected to finish top 4? or should we still be happy with 7th or 8th?

How are his other rejected players Ozil, Mustafi, Torreria and Kola getting along?

I haven't seen anyone wanting those to stay, so weird to bring them up. The only one would've been Torreira but he clearly didn't take to life in England so letting him go was the right choice. He's currently Fiorentina's player of the month so would say he's doing decently.
