Looked like that second half defensive performance was by design. Bringing on Tavares for Odegaard also hints at that. Complete opposite of what Pep did midweek.

Yeah but I think in general there was a more cautious / time wasting approach. Xhaka wasting time, Saka less urgent etc. Looks like Arteta was shutting up shop.

Game was won at HT. Good game/energy management imo. We got games thick and fast in this period so no need to go full throttle second half.

Lacazette was doing that shit in the first half before Arteta had even had a chance to speak to them.

Arteta has spoken a few times recently about the team needing to learn to go for the jugular. I think if he was saying something different in the dressing room that sort of public criticism would go down like a lead baloon with the players.

We are not at City’s level to dominate teams for 90 mins. What we should have done better is counter.

Agreed = we're in the 2nd half of the busiest month for the EPL fixture list for the season & we are very reliant upon these players to maintain performance levels.

Even if he did get us UEFA qualification I'm still not sure he's the right manager to be able to sustain it as he has no experience.

EDIT - despite our recent form I'm not convinced we can achieve UEFA qualification without strengthening at CM/DM and CF during the Jan transfer window.

That's pretty standard manager rhetoric though, took me 2 seconds to google Klopp saying something along the same lines:

“I cannot convince them to fight if they are not fighters. If they are not ready to put all their desire in the game and show determination I cannot do that."

Conte, Mourinho, Pep will all come out with the same sort of thing. We all remember Mourinho telling his players on All or Nothing that they need to be cunts. I'm sure you'd see similar stuff on the City version too. Cultivating that sort of attitude seems to feature quite highly for most of the top managers.

The bigger issue is I've not really seen too much evidence of that fighting spirit on the pitch. We've shown decent ability to bounce back I guess, but in games like OT and Everton 'victims' is probably the perfect word fore what we looked like.

If you're already negatively predisposed to a person, I think you're more likely to infer negative attributes on what they say/do. And vice versa.

And Brendan also said "similar" stuff in his interviews while looking like a massive tool. These soundbites rarely mean much but if you can't see the difference between what Klopp said and Arteta there's little to say, I can't convince you to read if you're no reader

More interesting however is no one seems to mind that everyone has to respect Arteta's decisions because he makes them with the clubs best interests in mind.

That sentence didn't even make any sense, 'we have the trust the decision I made... because we were involved'? Are we sure it's been transcribed correctly? Feels like he'd have been talking about the decisions made by the PL.

Nothing to do with my own predisposition but Arteta's own words and actions not matching up. He talks about victims making excuses while he throws his players under the bus any chance he gets. End of last season he says the squad was playing at capacity. During his first catastrophic run despite having shifted half the first XI he says he needs another five or six starters

I'm not attributing anything to the man. If you want to talk a big game you should be able to have something to show for yourself, you guye compare him to some of the best coaches in the world and don't even realise how utterly wrong that sounds

To be fair, that was pretty smooth. I find him much more interesting to listen to when he's a little riled up.

I've heard older Arsenal fans talk about Arteta reminding them of George Graham, especially when he first arrived and was rebuilding the club. I definitely see the comparison from what I've seen of Graham down the years - more from his latter managerial gigs and from his punditry.

I saw this a while back and it feels like Arteta would be similarly cold and calculating in meting out his punishment:

But, whatever the similarity or not - or whether that's a good or bad thing - I love that he is demanding the highest standards at Arsenal. That he won't tolerate players taking the piss out of the club, and mostly that he understands that Arsenal is not just any old club.

People will disagree I'm sure, but I'm really glad he's here.
