Yeah raising your intensity needs to be something you can do when its called for, NLD, crucial 6 pointer, big cup game, etc You shouldn't need to rely on it every week.
I don't think that's possible anymore. It's gotta be full intensity, week in and week out, or you'll slip up.
which i think is why we need to continue to utilize the whole squad. i think its unreasonable to play with 100% intensity when you are playing 3 games per week. you cant ask players to press at max capacity for 90 minutes 3 times in 7 days. we dont have europe to worry about and the FA cup will alternate with the premier league weekends for the most part. if the younger players need a break, you give them a break and rotate the squad. not all at once, but in a way that makes sense.
elite teams also have a way of pressing, getting up by multiple goals, and then getting the other team to drop their heads and take their foot off the gas. when that happens, you dont need to play a maniacal pace/press, you can control the game. we let teams hang around far too often, and no team, even a shit team, is going to give up when they are only down 1-0 in the 80th minute. get a team down 2-0 after 25 mins because of your effort and energy, and you'll see their heads and energy levels drop quicker
