Has Arteta Truly Turned it Around?

What we learned from the last 2 games: the players are on Arteta’s side, not Aubameyang’s.

The players were up for it tonight, and I guess credit to Arteta for that. It was really a must win, and we won. They played with energy and some purpose. Our football is still struggling badly though. It’s hard to get past that.

Good result for Arteta and 'the process', and a vindication of sorts regarding the action re PEA.
He should be 'safe' but much will depend on how we are positioned once MU & TH play their games in hand over us.

It's good to see us back in top4 even if it is not entirely on merit in terms of postponed fixtures.
We now need to sustain the effort and performance going forward to get the results to retain top4 on merit.

I don't think we are ever going to play eye catching football under Arteta but if we find a way to play through the press away from home or even at home, we will surely see a big improvement in consistency of results.

I thought the football was pretty good vs West Ham. Which is annoying when we're diabolical away enough to lose against a garbage heap team like Everton as they are right now.

the football was better I thought, more passing between the lines. but you're right, it was mainly built off us maintaining energy and enthusiasm throughout the match rather than outstanding football

Yeah, that is how I saw it too. I don't think we will see a style that will make us sit up in awe under Arteta ever but I can see us being a very efficient side that strings results together, if things click.

Intensity and energy is no small thing though, if we kept it up vs United and Everton we win those games. If we can keep that up we will be absolutely fine, the chances and spaces will instantly increase.

no question. If we minimise falling into those low-intensity lulls, we'll pick up more points. I was happy that we physically outplayed west ham, not many teams do that to them

I don't think you can play with that super high intensity all the time though, you will always have some lulls. Or you do it for ages then completely crash like Leeds.

also true, but there's too much of a chasm in our intensity levels. we're either really flat or really on it like west ham/villa. sometimes we fluctuate drastically within the same game ala spurs and leciester. liverpool were able to figure it out eventually. they ran themselves into the ground when klopp first arrived, but found a middle ground that doesn't hinge on them clocking up 20-25% more kilometres than the opposition in every game

That's where it becomes important to take opportunities and be able to relax into a game, instead of getting a one goal lead and looking like we're going to crumble. Intensity, goals and game management is something we need to learn to cycle through.

We outplayed them playing football as well.... Much more coherent attack, easily best game of the season for me.

I think we start with intensity most weeks (it had been absent the last few games but was back last night) but often fall away after 15-30 minutes, especially if the opposition get into the game. I think its one of the reasons our home form is so much better than our away, the fans give the players that extra boost to keep the intensity up longer.

We wouldn't really have to maintain it, Watford and Newcastle at home are examples of games were you don't ever really need to leave 2nd gear. The invincibles used to be great at turning it on for about 20 mins and then just killing the game into a slow paced conclusion. I'd argue by pressing with a bit more purpose you end up saving energy too by not having to chase the ball around for prolonged periods.

Our intensity levels yesterday were not anything extra ordinary yesterday anyway, it just made a nice change from the lifeless stuff we saw against Everton and United for long periods.

it's probably also a function of the low goals/chances we generate. when you start on the front foot all the time but don't have much to show for it, doubts start creeping in, passes go astray, players become more reticent to press high. we didn't fall into that pattern yesterday, we just kept pushing until we got what we deserved

Yeah raising your intensity needs to be something you can do when its called for, NLD, crucial 6 pointer, big cup game, etc You shouldn't need to rely on it every week.

Yep. Or the other problem we have away from home is we get the goal and then drop the intensity.

I don't think that's possible anymore. It's gotta be full intensity, week in and week out, or you'll slip up.

That's Spurs and United's next games been postponed due to continuing outbreaks in their squad.

Assuming we stay clear of any serious outbreak which affects our games, and the league continues, that's a few fixtures both of them need to catch up on which will add a bit of congestion later in the season when legs are starting to get tired.

So much uncertainty with COVID, but I'd rather be in fourth place with points on the board than a place or two below with games in hand at this point in the season.
