This is exactly the same thing many people here said about Gnabry when he was sold, plenty was happy to get 5m for him because he was injury prone and I said lets look back in a few years time and within 2 years people looked stupid.

I don't think this is accurate, pretty much everyone was excited about what he was going to do for us after his exploits at the U20s world cup or whatever it was, and then you had guys like me who always loved Gnabry even during the Pulis years.

£6m was 'ok' because he had a year left, was refusing to sign and basically pretty much had an agreement with those criminals at Bayern. It was that or nothing, it's what they do.

You liked him but there were plenty that thought he was hopeless even after the olympics gold medal. Ox was twice the player he will ever be or something.

IIRC AW said it was his policy to keep a space open in the senior squad to develop players via game time, even despite knowing those players would be inconsistent and probably cost points dropped.

i'm happy to admit serge is one i misjudged. i wasn't campaigning for his exit or anything, and i thought he was a decent talent, but i was completely ambivalent about him leaving arsenal

The problem is our paid scouts can't judge them either. One thing to misjudge Malen or even Bennacer, neither looked like they were going to tear it up really and every club has one or two of those who got away. You can also excuse the club for letting Reine-Adelaide leave as he had injury issues and there was no clear path to the first team for him at the time.
I'll never forgive Wenger or anyone at Arsenal though for backing Alexander Mark David Steven Gerrard Oxlade-Chamberlain over Gnabry and even Joel Campbell for that matter. That's a classic crime against futbol matter for the international courts

With Arsenal I sometimes wonder how much power scouts had. As much as we give them grief, I think our processes were so broken that scout input just ended up being disregarded. Or they were overridden by narrow data from StatDNA, etc. We just sound like a club that has (had) a bad decision making process

Every club can make mistakes, but we were in a awful situation under wenger where he didn’t bring through any youngsters and we bought average to poor players.

Balogun will be an interesting development this season, as will Saliba.

We have to see what have internally within reason, before buying. When we buy it should be the top of what is available, which is my problem with the White signing.

Wheatley says Holding is considered part of Arteta's leadership group and won't be going anywhere. Unless we switch to a 3-4-3 (unlikely given Arteta's preference for a 4-3-3) or if Mari leaves (again seems unlikely), it seems like there's no room for Saliba.

That makes sense. Power to Holding is he sustains/wins his spot in spite of challengers. Else a good deputy. Even just based on squad morale and wellbeing I'm now not expecting Saliba to be in the 25.

Glad to hear that. White is still flaky and people need to accept that he's not the finished article just because we are overpaying for him. Gabriel isn't ready to lead the defence either so we need someone there who can add stability and experience and leadership among our CBs. Holding was our best CB last season so it would have been a huge set back to move him on this summer.

True, I have no issues with Holding staying at all except for what it means for Saliba.

Holding, Chambers, ESR, Saka, Tierney, Willock, White and potentially Maddison... the British core is back!
