from what I've seen we've given little indication to saliba that he's an important piece of the future. he's constantly spoken about by the coach as some afterthought, a returning junior that he may deign to run his eyes over during pre-season.

this is why the 'wait and see, let's allow them to build' mentality towards edu and arteta rings hollower as more time passes. we need start heeding occams razor with these 2. what we hope are jupiter brained 8D chess moves are just convulsive nonsensical decisions made by rookie bunglers who have no oversight

I think we have sufficient information on Saliba. We know everything that has happened in the past and I don’t want to rehash that.

Going into next season I just think Edu / Arteta said the following:

they want a centreback pairing that is good on the ball
however, Saliba / Gabriel is too inexperienced to start every game together in a back 2
so bring in White.

The same White that has 1 season in championship and 1 season in PL.

But the Saliba who had 3 seasons in Ligue 1 will be gone without ever being given a chance after costing 25m.

That White did enough to make the England national team. Saliba isn’t even on u23 France national team. In 3 years time based on what we’ve seen of both players, Saliba is probably the better, but I think Edu / Arteta are trying to balance the future and the present. I.e., how do we compete today while building for tomorrow?

As much as folks here hate him, Luiz is a big loss on build up play. That right side of defense has no build up ability whatsoever. This is a smart move. I don’t want another lost season.

If we want, we can even deploy them in a 343. Saliba has played all back 3 positions. Just get a good RWB in

So what do you think personally Claude, that we should get rid of Saliba? Surely your opinion can't be that if we keep him you want to keep him and if we don’t you think that's the right decision too.

I'm not gonna pretend I wouldn't be thrilled to have White, but it's an indefensible signing all things considered, and neither his current level nor his experience makes a compelling argument: he was probably the second best defender at Brighton last season, which was his first one in Premier League. He's another development project, albeit one with huge potential. The difference is that he's someone Arteta wants while Saliba is not.

I’ve watched a lot of Saliba games so I have belief that he will one day be a top defender. But I also understand a manager looking at his squad and being nervous about youthfulness.

The same thing happened last season and we brought in Willian to stabilize the front line. I very much prefer White to Willian as a stabilising mechanism in terms of ability. A young England international who is good on the ball? I can’t complain

Who knows maybe Arteta sees White at the base of the midfield ala Declan Rice ?

Also if we are playing 3 at the back, a guy like White gives you the flexibility to step up and create a 235 offense if you want with 2 centrebacks back and the wingbacks pushed forward.
