yup. matteo has to own his failures. many players have raised their value in the bundesliga so being sent out on loan shouldn't have been a detriment to his value if he really had IT.

Hunger wasn't the problem with Guendouzi. He developed a reputation though and the bigger teams might want to stay away. He still has to show top level quality too. When there is no interest from England and the the bigger teams on the continent are not interested then we aren't going to get anymore than what is being reported in this market for a player and character like him.

We have to be okay with the idea that not everybody will make it at Arsenal or at the highest level. I’m just comfortable that several young players are distinguishing themselves at our club, so at least opportunities are there now. This isn’t like when Wenger blocked Malen, Bennacer and co

You have no idea what happened at Hertha last season. They make your average PL club look sensibly run in comparison, a club that announced it wanted to make its mark on Europe barely survived in the top flight despite massive investment. Guendouzi did reasonably well relatively speaking and if we sell him for 12m it's because a) covid finances and b) we're fucking idiots. Even in this market he's worth close to double that.

Lehmann said much the same thing before he was sacked when he was talking about the 50+1% ownership, saying it isn't always the solution and can pull a club apart with different agendas.

I'm only seeing that personal terms have been agreed and there is no agreement between the clubs re a transfer fee, with OM reportedly only wanting to spend 10m + add-ons.

It doesn’t really matter how chaotic Hertha is. Guendouzi had a season plus where he was a starter here. Scouts have a lot to go on.

Pretty much, you can’t negotiate a broke French side into paying €25m for a kid who’s not wanted, has a rep and is down to a year on his deal in a COVID market.

If you had another PL side interested, like Everton, maybe you’d get quite a bit more.

We have so many players we could be getting rid of this summer. If the club do what is required and manage to offload the deadwood we will be in an incredible position to strengthen the first team. With no European commitments, we can afford to go into next season with a leaner squad and I hope we do so.

I am optimistic about next season but am also cautious on the basis that Arteta will be at the helm and I am just not sold on the man. His football is putrid and the worst I have seen played at this club since I became a supporter. Hopefully he translate his shit style to results but I won't be holding my breath on this.

IF we get the summer right then we will be in a position whereby top4 should be the minimum acceptable outcome. 🙂
At this stage that is my expectation, however ask me again what I think when the transfer window closes. :brow:

Three of the four factors you have mentioned are down to ourselves, its mostly the point I'm making in terms of us being poor at selling. If you let it be known we don't want him here of course you're diminishing his value, same with his expiring contract or the lack of buzz around him which is probably the easiest thing to create for agents. He's just turned 22, I'd much rather keep him than sell him if 12m is all we get but again look at how Chelsea and Liverpool sell their dross, compare that to our fans who'd be happy with 30m for him and Willock combined.

IMO it started with AW and his policy of selling want-away players for no more than market value at the time, so as to enable the older players to get their last payday in the sun, and to avoid any ill feeling within the squad from any others who wanted to leave.

Reminds me of that time when we sold Alex Song for £16m to Barcelona (great deal at the time) and leaked stories about him getting into a fight with Steve Bould and being a prick in the dressing room AFTER the sale had gone through. That’s how it’s done. We contributed to the devaluing of Guendouzi ourselves but telling the whole world that he’s trouble. Amazing piece of asset management. How incompetent can you be?

Yep we destroyed his value and completely mismanaged him. Never would have happened under Wenger.
