I was just thinking that I'd rather keep Guendouzi and loan him out again than sell him for a cutrate fee, but then I looked at when his deal is up. These sites aren't always known for their accuracy but Transfermarkt has his contract down as ending in 2022. With only a year left and a player who doesn't want to be here what are you going to do? €15 million doesn't sound unreasonable to me. It might have been a bit higher otherwise.

Either way I hope he's not coming back. Bloke's not Arsenal quality (not even present Arsenal) and pretty much the last thing we need next season is paying for his education with any more points on the pitch.

We should be able to raise quite a bit of money. Problem is how will Edu and Arteta use the money.

The Xhaka issue could put the club in a bit of a pickle if we have not already prioritized and identified his replacement, and have a deal in place by the time he gets back from the Euros. We can’t afford to wait till later on in the window when options have become scarce(r).

These are guys from our academy, how many have we paid for and then sold on a profit in recent years. Chamberlain is the only one that comes to mind.

Yes but Saks and ESR are also better players. The Ox was a great squad player but probably not as good as say Ramsay. Guendouzi is a tool and has proved that at 2 or 3 clubs. He can’t control himself. Sure we could have kept our annoyance at him private but he also publicised his displeasure at the club. DoF’s of other clubs would have known the situation pretty clearly.

We can’t control who is interested in him, and if it’s just some broke a French club then we can’t control that. We can’t control the COVID market either.

We could have handled things a bit better, and Arteta bears much of the blame for his “my way or the highway” attitude being played so publicly. But we were never gonna get 25-30m for him with only a year left on his contract in this market.

Three of the four factors you have mentioned are down to ourselves, its mostly the point I'm making in terms of us being poor at selling. If you let it be known we don't want him here of course you're diminishing his value, same with his expiring contract or the lack of buzz around him which is probably the easiest thing to create for agents. He's just turned 22, I'd much rather keep him than sell him if 12m is all we get but again look at how Chelsea and Liverpool sell their dross, compare that to our fans who'd be happy with 30m for him and Willock combined.

Those are factors as to why we have a poor negotiating position, they're not factors as to why Marseille are the best and seemingly the only side interested in him.

The Liverpool sales is a perfect illustration of my point, the clubs interested determine the value. We managed to sell Ox for £40m with a year left on his deal because both Pool and Chelsea wanted him. We managed to sell Iwobi for £35m because big spending Everton desperately wanted a winger at the last moment because Zaha fell through. It's all about circumstances, timing and luck.

And part of it is just an image issue, CL winners dross looks a hell of a lot more appealing than mid table dross.

There was talk the altercation was about Guendouzi taunting the BHA players during the game about him earning more than them & Maupay called him out on it leading to the exchange after the whistle.

As for standing up to Maupay about the challenge on Leno, I'd have more respect if someone had done so at the time rather than after the game.

It was Ox that got sold for 35m.

Guendouzi is not a tool, he's young and a bit of a hothead. Vieira was a better player obviously but used to get in trouble for no reason all the time, then let's not forget him taking the piss the summer before we won the double with him even going for his team mates and his manager by name. Didn't end up all that bad with our captain did it.

Oft if you think it's all circumstantial and luck then you really are the ideal customer, sorry to say it. Liverpool sold their garbage at inflated prices long before they won anything, can't be bothered to post a full list but how Many Ibes Solankes Brewsters have they pushed out for fuck off money. Chelsea probably even worse, Costa Morata as chewed up as they could get and they made 100m+. Now they're selling some academy kid to skint Milan for like 30m.

Im not even a sales man but the point is you make your market yourself and find suitors for your players, not sit on your thumbs waiting for a bloke to burrow through your goods for a fee reasonable to him. We all agree that Guendouzi could've been sold for at least double that some 18 to 24 months ago, what's keeping us from getting Arteta to publicly reinstate him even if only for show, possibly extend his contract with a release clause, drum up some interest using some agents here or there. Disregarding obviously that we could use him ourselves which Arteta seems to rule out. Literally every other option is better than letting him go like this.

We alienated Guendouzi because we want to build a more professional culture. Stressing that narrative is more important than a few million dollars on one man’s transfer fee. Meanwhile those kids who have remained are worth significantly more.

Seems like Saliba doesn’t get along with Arteta too, should we sell at a loss their too to create this professional culture?

IMO we’d be better off giving Douzi a contract and sending him on loan, rather than get £10m or whatever peanuts we’ll get for him now.

The Saliba situation is mostly a fabrication of media men like James McNichollas. Saliba is justifiably annoyed that we wasted 4 months of his career as anyone of us should be. You can hear that in his interviews. There’s nothing more substantive to the story.
