According to transfermarkt his contract is up in 2022, Roma will lose him for free otherwise.

Not sure getting rid of Xhaka is a good idea.. We are going to need to spend Partey level money in order to get a substantial upgrade and even then there is still a risk, and with hime gone we will probably need to bring in 2 players.

Obviously there is a risk with any signing but one of the worst things we can do this summer recruitment wise is mess up the cm role. Hopefully there is a plan but not impressed with the names mentioned so far...

IMO part of the issue is we have no clear idea as to what sort of shape or roles we are supposedly build towards - 4231 / 433 / 343 / 541 etc.

no we don't. xhaka is worth about 20m euros and you're saying a substantial upgrade is gonna cost 50m? and why does the upgrade have to be substantial? a simple upgrade is more than enough reason to get rid of him. you all just love making excuses to keep that loser around.

He is worth more than that.. and wasnt Party 40m? Point is, im saying sign a top cm and keep Xhaka as bench, right now our backup players are worthless and wouldnt trust them for any extended period of time.

Agree Anzac, im not as anti Arteta as most but still consfused what it is he want to do with the midfield.

Xhaka will never be ok with all of a sudden becoming a squad player, at 29 in what is supposed to be his prime years. No way, he has 2 years left, we either sign him up and keep playing him or sell him now, no in between. It also makes no sense for us to give him a new contract, with bigger wages just so we keep him as a rotation option.

I dont really care whether he is happy or not. Was Laca happy as being a bench player in his prime?.. Im sure there are multipule exapmles across many teams.. If we are only going to have bench players who are 'ok' with being there then we will never have a top team.. You have a point about his contract though..

Remember when alot of people here wouldn't even sell him for 25m last summer, think he is worth 40m and clubs will queue up for him.
