In my case it's because I don't see Nketiah ever being good enough while with Balogun I haven't reached that conclusion yet.

Why should he though? Eddie kept scoring when he got a chance. Young players can't just demand to come in and start. When Eddie broke through he had an even better impact than Balogun, scoring twice against Norwich. He's had to be patient for years since then and wait for an opportunity, and when he got it he repaid with goals, both for Arsenal and internationally. It's how things go with young players. Balogun looks like he's exactly where he should be on that curve. At 19 he's starting to get opportunities, has immediately showed that he deserves more of them, and is starting to get them.

There are always those who decide they can't wait and up and leave. Some turn out like Xavier Amaechi and Chris Willock, some like Malen. If Balogun is looking at Arsenal currently with two main strikers over 30 and Nketiah ahead of him and thinks the path to the first team is shut then he's being impatient. There's nothing preventing him from signing and then going on loan either.

Eddie has had a decent run in the 5eam and was fine when there was no other choice but he's pretty limited in his displays even sheen the team has functioned well. Balogun is knocking on the door and given Eddie doesn't look like he's going to dramatically improve his stats any time soon, I think he deserves a shot (assuming he signs a contract). Your point about the huge variation in how our youth perform when they leave us is valid but at this point, Eddie is just as likely (if not more given his lack of improvement with greater experience) to become the next Afobe.

I've said this before but suggesting that Nketiah getting game time being the reason for Balogun leaving is just absurd, especially if he thinks that he's better. If you want an indication that you've got a path to the first team, there's no clearer indicator than a supposedly inferior but slightly older player getting 38 appearances in 12 months, never mind that we had 3 teenagers starting against Chelsea and a squad full of academy products.

If you want to compare his stats to Balogun's on the previous page:

Nketiah:
U18: 17 goals and assists in 16 games.
Under 23: 35 goals and assists in 37 games.
England U21: 16 goals (no clue about asists) in 14 games and their all time top scorer.
Arsenal this season: 6 goals and assists in 760 minutes in 20/21, was our top scorer up until like three weeks ago.

This has been a difficult season for most players to navigate, and for forwards doubly so with our horrible uncreative football that has starved them of chances, but it's not really hard to see that he has plenty of qualities, albeit raw, and that's why Arteta has trusted him with playing time. You're allowed to think Arteta has gotten that completely wrong, idc. Maybe he has. All I'm saying is that there are plenty of things to motivate his decision to put minutes into Eddie's development.

And Afobe never scored a goal or made a first team appearance for us. Nketiah surpassed him on both accounts when he was still 17.

So as I said, he's not reached double digits in goals for us over the course of 2020 (9 by my count). Given his one thing is goalscoring, that's not great. And whilst I acknowledge we've been through a tough period, the team was functioning for a decent portion of 2020 and he still failed to look dangerous.

Agree that Arteta did see something in him but he was also looking for a way to mitigate Laca's dreadful form. Now Laca is vaguely functional again, Nketiah isn't getting a sniff in the league.

Aside from that, I just haven't seen enough from him to suggest that he'll ever become good enough for a team with our ultimate ambition.

I think people are very hard on Eddie and I think if he was the striker in the team at the weekend he'd have scored a goal or two as well. He's very in tune with our other young players and would link really well with Saka, ESR, etc

The real issue we have about Eddie is that he's got value and his contract is in its last 18 months. Its stick or twist time and not just for us but for Eddie as well. Who knows what he expects if he signs a new deal in terms of his role at the club. Add to that Balogun has 6 months left so he's gone for zero and you end up with a situation where the club has to at least see what their opportunities are around selling Eddie. If Balogun is wanting Eddies minutes and Eddies wanting more minutes than he's getting and you can sell Eddie for a decent fee plus secure Balogun who also has future value then it might make sense to sell Eddie and keep Balogun.

Ultimately we will find out a good answer to this Eddie v Balogun debate as early as this Sat. If the latter starts then it’s goodbye Eddie.

At end of the day, the premier league became a robotic league....and that is one of the reasons he has been phased out.

He was a top player, and the type that you pay money to watch, and I will always remember when he joined............
