I’m pretty sure Arteta wanted Willian, I also generally think it’s fair enough (I thought it would be a decent signing). I think what’s more concerning is that Edu seemed to be actively pushing him when he should have been the one to raise questions about how smart a move that really is.

Arteta may well have said he wanted him / supported the signing, and may even have convinced the player to join, but that doesn't mean he was 1st choice in that position/role, and may well have been a case of if we spend 45m on Partey we don't have anything for anyone else. In saying that I realise Willian was one of the first signings last summer, but if we're keeping our powder try on bigger fish it makes sense to get what we can when we can.

IIRC there was a comment made in the media claiming it was not a case of either/or for Partey/Aouar as had been reported at the time, in which case I call BS as we've seen no signs of any additional funds being made available in Jan. We've been supplementing via loan players (MO, Ryan, Ceballos, Mari, Soares) and Bosmans (Luiz, Willian) for the last 2 seasons and it doesn't look like changing anytime soon.

That seems to be exactly what Arteta wanted because he kept him out there far more than Willian did when he was at Chelsea.

Anyway the Willian deal was a bad one, playing him constantly in the first half of the season was appalling management when you have Pepe in the squad. However thats all over, lets see if he makes the same mistakes in bringing in mediocrity ahead of better players we already have this summer.

Yeah Willian was a shit player who turned out to be a shit signing, hardly mindblowing. Bloke has no skills, is old as hell and earns big wages due to the signing on fee. If we can move him without having to subsidise anything it will be incredible business on our part, almost as unbelievable as signing him in the first place, but in a good way this time.

Maybe next time an over the hill goalkeeper, centreback or winger wants to move on from Chelsea due to falling way behind in the pecking order we shouldn't jump the gun. Fool us thrice, shame on you. Fool us four times...

I wonder if part of the reason for Willian over Pepe was tactical to maintain width?
Bellerin was the RWB in the 343 and we know he likes to come inside on the underlap rather than the overlap. Willian stays wide as Pepe also comes inside as he's more a WF than winger. With both Bellerin & Pepe wanting to come inside we lose any width as the flank collapses infield & at worst they both look to take up much the same positions on the pitch and we become too linear along the same vertical line.

It's not strange to want to sign someone badly, but realised the fan base is against him and he hasn't put in many good performances despite persisting in him then discarding him after.
