Agree with that. Squad basically needs to be a combo of star seniors and promising youngsters. Anything else is wasted squad investment.

guardian adding xhaka and lacazette to the list of players on the bubble. they both need to go if any decent offer comes in. so much dreck to be swept out, to the point you expect another season in no man's land. so much experience walking out the door - even if it is of mediocre quality - usually leaves a scar for a while

My concern is that if this style of slow risk adverse football is what Arteta wants, then both Xhaka and Laca are potential starters next season and we will not look to improve our pace in transition, but rather we look to regain AW's template of flooding the midfield with AMs.

Beats me. I doubt he likes slow football. He just wants to build high percentage chances. And he’s struggling to implement it.

You get high percentage chances by taking risks. Either that or you get a top 3 player in every position in your team in which case you don't even need a manager.

Agree with Claude. Arteta has alluded to this at times. He is averse to risk, that can't be disputed and he talks a lot about efficiency. I think his focus is not on volume but to probe and carve out 2 or 3 clear cut chances that we are unlikely to miss. This while ensuring we don't concede openings either. I don't like the approach but it is what it is. He maintained that we created enough to win 1-0 against Villareal, or against Fulham and Everton.

I also don't believe that playing a 10 and Partey indicates his desire to speed our football. If it was true we would have seen it. If anything Partey started off with intent and that's gone from his game now too. Again, not sure if confidence or instruction.

Arteta seems to have lost the players in recent times, and that's going to be a problem moving forward and casts serious doubts about his ability to manage a squad. But, aside from KSE selling up asap, by biggest hope for this summer isn't that Arteta is replaced, it's that we sell 10 players from this squad. I don't care if it's unrealistic. We have a rubbish squad, three quarters full with overpaid losers and we won't do anything until they're gone and replaced with half a team of quality footballers.

Aye theirs very little hunger and desire in the squad for a lot of reasons. Wenger tried to bring in championship guys like Carl as perepherial players to add some much needed fight. And chatted about how the kids were not really up for CL games becasue they'd always just played them. Emery added Leich and others to specifically add fight and talked about how the dressing room needed xhaka and how these players "ask for more than they give". Arteta brought in Luiz who has won shitloads and has a real hunger to win. Mari discussed how arteta brough him in to add that maturity to the dressing room. It's a huge long term issue and players like douzi Ozil Sok Kola were only the tip of the iceberg.

when has bombing out an entire squad been the answer? there's pieces that need changing for sure but people are in for a rude awakening if they think that's the end all be all. even if alot of the experienced guys aren't up to it, selling them all in 1 window will take at least a season to recover from, possibly longer with arteta in charge

If we are going for an overhaul it should be a job for a new manager, not one who's proven he's not up to the job.

The thoughts of a new manager being stuck with a bunch of inspiration-less automatons in 6 months time when Arteta is inevitably fired is a real worry.

Regardless of whether they're leaving or not it's good news they're showing their discontent. Let's hope well poisoning David Luiz gets to have a chat with Edu any time soon, wonder how qs and Klaus will react if it's Luiz who snakes Arteta and gets him out of the club 😆

Conte has expeciation of players despite their reputations, so does pep and arteta. they expect players to play for the teams good rather than their own good. Willian was never going to get the star treatemnt he wanted at arsenal. He'll head off to america and get to play with some freedoms. Personally I'm glad we're not building anything around him.

Xhaka will no doublt be a huge loss. We've be shocking in midfield without him for years. A new midfield is likey to take a year to adapt like partey, fred, VDB ect.

I agree with Speedy on Xhaka. He will be a massive loss. You can see how shaken Arteta was by his injury when we lost to Villarreal. No matter where he plays, the ball flows through him and he’s an important changing room leader.

The thing about squad building though is you need to be brave. You need to be willing to sacrifice the likes of Xhaka and Luiz in the hope that new leaders will emerge on the field and in the changing room. Either from incumbents or new transfers. That’s how we evolve, strengthen and allow players to blossom.

The issue is the people call leaders now are not good leaders, just being popular like Luiz doesn't make you a good leader. How often does he show any leadership in matches? He certainly doesn't marshal the defence or offer a sense of stability and calm to those around him. Xhaka has a bit of fight in him at times which is better than a lot of them but he's still far from an inspiring leader.

As you say claud, part of moving on is being brave. Sticking with the likes of Xhaka and Luiz is the sort of conservative thinking that has gotten us to the place we are now.

Xhaka has been a key part of the team for the last three seasons which have been the worst ones in modern times. There are absolutely no worries about losing him. What's the concern, to finish worse than our current 9th position next season if he's not here? Any midfield built around Partey and Smith-Rowe instead of Xhaka is going to be superior, whether it has played five games together or fifty.

Yeah I agree, the fact that we finished 9th means we've very little to lose from losing him. There may well be some instability, but Granit didn't exactly stabalise anything this year. He was as big a culprit as anyone when it comes to our early season form.
