I think we'd do better with him than we would without as almost every preformance over the past 5 years has shown.

Exactly. The thoughts of going into next season with the same midfield would be depressing. Xhaka isn't the worst player in the squad but he's not good enough for how much he plays. Ideal world he'd be 3rd choice with a decent manager but if Arteta is manager he'll play every game again.

I think it used to be true, but not anymore. The role Xhaka played doesn't really exist anymore in a midfield with Partey. Xhaka for all his faults used to have unique distribution qualities in that deep role but it's been a while since we relied on him. He's forced to be more dynamic now and he just can't do it. He's got a professional mindset but he doesn't hold a candle to Elneny when it comes to providing lungs in midfield, nor to Ceballos when it comes to bring some drive and creativity. Next season you have Willock coming back too, and Maitland-Niles if we don't sell him. What does Xhaka have over either of them in a mobile role? And that's not even considering the fact that a new CM is probably at the top of our shopping list this summer.

He's probably right to want to move this summer, because in addition to Arsenal being a crapfest I just can't see him play regularly in 21/22.

Xhaka simply doesn't suit a 2 CM midfield, and we're forced to play with 2 DMs to mitigate his weaknesses. As a result the forwards are often isolated and the CAM/CF is forced to come deep for the ball. Likewise his distribution is both too slow/measured, and lacks verticality in transition unless we are already in the opposition defensive 3rd and he receives the ball when we look to re-set from deeper. Too often his play in our half prioritises possession over progression.

We look a lot better with xhaka than elneny or dani. Christ the absolute state of Dani in that EL campaign says it all.
AMN would have been perfect against Chelsea. But he has no real creativity on the ball. Unless we're going to play the type of football you hate where you catch teams on the break I don't see him solving the issues.

Ideally we upgrade on xhaka, but in reality most midfielders take a year to settle into the league and we generally look shocking without xhaka. Partey helps but it's still a big issue especially when theirs still question marks over parteys fitness.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

We need another two CM signings this summer.

One to permanently dump Xhaka on his arse and one as insurance for Partey's frankly shocking form and fitness issues and/or serious competition for him.

One of these two should be a kid with some experience.

I think fans need to set their expectations. As you say, we have a ton of players to sell. What you will also note is every big team has massive squads that need offloading after a lack of sales last summer. Meanwhile teams in the continent have no money.

So you have an excess of supply, and no cash in the market. What does that sound like? Low fees and loans. And lots of players folks moan about endlessly sticking around. This is a good time to set realistic expectations.

How does any of that justify extending Lacazette's contract?

Only way it happens is if KSE provide a transfer war chest to regain top4.

IMO there are 3 scenarios for this summer:

1 = we're skint and Transfers In depends on the funds raised by Transfers Out. Most transfer targets are the likes of Brandt & Co who are available for <25m tops;

2 = revenues generated by Transfers Out provides the bulk of the funds, but KSE will provide additional revenue to enable the squad to be complete, balanced and fit for purpose so as to regain UEFA qualification (top7), and potentially win a domestic Cup. Transfer targets may top out at 30-50m for key player/s or roles;

3 = a transfer war chest is provided to ensure the rebuild is complete, balanced and fit for purpose but also at the quality needed to regain top4 - the match day squad will need to be better than those of any club not named MC, CFC or LFC.

If that was the only intent then we will be more likely to retain the status quo in terms of table position.

EDIT = That is because we cannot just play the numbers as we need to upgrade at both CM and CF at the least in terms of suitability of roles. At the very least the objective should be to start the season with a match day squad that is 'fit for purpose'.

They wanted to give Mustafi a new contract. Why would you be surprised?

I like how we were giving Mustafi a new contract in October. And then in January he was playing in the Bundesliga. Only believe things when deals are signed.
