Who and how many we bring in will tell us a lot about how confident and ambitious management feels about a European seeding this season. Not sure what to be make from those talking points. We better be inquiring about some quality players and not writing off yet another season.

Excellent if true.

While Isco is a great technician, both are not players we should be in for. We need more legs in every position, not less.

Happy with that. The Aouar one sounds like BS however - how can you be interested in a player over the summer and then do additional scouting at the same time that makes you decide you're no longer interested?

I'd speculate that we're trying to cover our tracks with the fact that Aouar just wasn't that keen on joining.

I am speculating because of Aouar's antics off the field. Because Ornstein said we have done more scouting, more than just watching games. Can be interpreted as non footballing reasons I guess.

I think Aouar is a real talent but I don't see a spot for him in our team where he'd really be the right fit. He doesn't play like ESR and I don't see him as the right partner for Partey. The more I watch this team the more I worry that signing the wrong AM is going to fuck us up because its not an easy role to play in Artetas team and I think seeing as ESR is going better than anyone I've seen there since Arteta has taken over I think we need someone similar to him to rotate.

I really hope we are looking more at a deeper midfield partner for Partey, someone like a young Arteta who can sit and mop up breaks as well as being a quality passer that can dictate the tempo and transition from back to front. Partey needs the freedom to play box to box.

I think so too. I really think you need a hard worker with top off the ball movement, just someone who's very press resistant, and I could spot three in Premier League last season; Buendia, Grealish and Maddison. Two of them would probably have cost north of 80 million.

Aouar, from what I saw in Champions League, sank like a stone when he got pressed, which is annoyingly common with players from both the French and German leagues nowadays.

Except the opening line of the article says it is the OUT list for Jan.

I wonder if the plan was originally for us to switch to a 4-3-3 in the summer, but we’re now looking for recruits to fit a 4-2-3-1?

Which is why you’re better off not spending til you’re 100% sure.

There are 2 options re: ESR.
We can get a similar replacement to sub in for him. Szoboszlai actually would’ve been good as an alternate, especially given the stage of development.

The second option is build flexibility into the front 4. We had this in the Fabregas years. Rosicky, Hleb, Nasri and Fabregas could play multiple positions. Even Santi was originally bought for these roles. So buy and train the players for this fungibility.

I think that was exactly the case with Arteta's background at Barca as an academy player and under Pep at MC. IIRC he has spoken of his desire to play with a 433 previously, and he tried to do so at the beginning of Project Re-start.

As for Aouar I don't see him in a 2 CM midfield even with someone as adept defensively or athletically as Partey, but more so an an CMA in an inverted 3.
