Maybe we're not owed any such explanation, but if Smith-Rowe stays for next season, it would be kind of nice to have some open, transparent communication from the manager about why he was hardly used for a much needed injection in the Spring (with build up appearances prior). Whether that was down to fitness, recurring niggles, attitude, sharpness etc. I don't think he played all that much for Eng U21 and reserves this year?
Without clarification it will only fuel my skepticism about Mikel's short rope of trust, and lack of rotation. It would be helpful to see this start being addressed heading into his fourth season as manager. I was first surprised when Emile was front and centre of the new kit launch, and then this recent coordinated message through the press. I am more inclined to think there is no goal, just value protection and a open mind from Mikel for pre-season.
