Clrnc The context of the situations is very different though, and could play a big factor in how Arteta would put his message across on the issue. Aubameyang and Ozil were burning bridges and at the end of their careers, Smith-Rowe is seemingly needing nudged in the right direction.

I suspect it could also be what he’s doing on the pitch. ESR has a habit of playing within himself at times and that’s been the case in the few mins he did get. Very safe, get the ball, pass it back, pass it inside. Needs to provoke like Martinelli and Saka, or move like Xhaka.

He’s had like 10/15 mins of play since the New Year. Hardly has any time to prove himself.

If it wasn’t for ESR, Arteta would probably be out of a job.

He’s much better and more proven than Vieria, need to bring him on a lot more.

I don’t think we can move ESR on until Viera proves he’s a starter or impact sub. Between the two of them, I would still back ESR to break into the team (prob via cup teams next season).

We’ll have our hands full moving Pepe, Mari, Tavares, Tierney, Balogun etc this summer. No need to turn over even more of the squad when you’ve been this patient with his recovery.

Just offering up an explanation. Fwiw I think he should be used a lot more, but he needs to make every min count to make an impression. It’s not easy to win mins in this side.

Still not convinced ESR is an 8, although admittedly it's looking increasingly likely that is how Arteta sees him.. Think he is still more suited to the other AM positions with his pass and move game.. Any minutes is good for him I suppose..

He's got it in him, especially off the ball movement and engine as an 8. Third man runs are great and he knows how to get in scoring positions. He'd need more playing time to understand how to distribute in that role, developing those pictures so he has a good idea of what to do before he receives the ball. His speed of thought is too dependent on form and confidence. He'll need to demonstrate some comfort with a playing framework to fallback on even on his shit days if that makes sense. It's relatively more embedded for the left-side attacking role.

Qwiss Arteta always talks about attitude, and the last few times he banished players it was because of attitude. Won't be rocket science after hearing what he said about ESR last pre match
