I reckon he'll play as an 8 for us. It's how he has played most of the time when I've watched Atletico too.

And not just that he's hugely experienced with it. Europa winner, CL finalist, battled at the top of La Liga for years. Well used to the sort of effort Arteta will want because he's played for Simeone. He's tailor made to come into our midfield and improve us.

Not to do anyone a disservice but based on what I've read, he wanted more respect with regards to his salary.

Find it interesting athletic, telegraph both claim that Partey pretty much verbally agreed the teams of his contract 2 years ago at Highbury house when we are playing Napoli.

Yes, box to box. I think he's here to move the ball forward. I reckon we'll see Xhaka at the base with Ceballos and Partey a little ahead. Gives us more creative freedom in the forward line without sacrificing stability. We shall see soon enough what the plan is though.

I see him more in a double pivot.
That’s how he has been deployed and most effective at Atletico. Atletico play variations of the 442 with Saul and Partey most frequently the two middle players. Sometimes they switch other players around across the line of 4, but Partey is always in the middle if he is picked. In there what distinguishes him is his ability to take ball from defense, dribble through traffic and distribute the ball efficiently in a variety of directions. Beware the highlight reels. Atletico spend a lot of their time in their own half, but he is very reliable on the ball there.

I can see him in a similar role for us with either Ceballos or Xhaka. That means

we use him with Ceballos or Xhaka in a 343
use him with Xhaka; and have Ceballos or Willian ahead in a 433. Remember Ceballos has played advanced roles.

...at home against a deep block and...

Partey - Xhaka

...in a counter attacking set up.

Arteta is such a hard one to read though. He really doesn't stick to conventional systems. Look at the weekend where Elneny was virtually playing as a right back at times, similar to what Xhaka did on the left in the early stages of last season.

Can't wait for the City game. He is fit so hopefully gets straight in the first XI. That said he will be back late as Ghana play on Tuesday against Qatar so might not be back until Thursday and will probably only be be able to train on Friday but let's see.

They play Qatar early on a Monday in Turkey. He'll be here by Monday night, have a days rest and be in training by Wednesday.

Personally I doubt he starts though.
