Sambi Lokonga has generally looked good when he's played, I'm a bit surprised he hasn't made at least a few sub appearances over the last few weeks - I think he's the most obvious Partey replacement in the squad. Not that we're likely to get the same level of performance as Partey put in at, say, Old Trafford last season.

I think Lokonga would be more suited to back up to the new Xhaka-replacing-free scoring-much assisting-dynamo-first choice Partey partner. He's still a bit shakey defensively and I think his passing could be a real weapon if he pushed up a bit.

I am more than a little bit happy that all the ideas I have about how I'd love the team to be set up seem to align with Arteta's. I have always wanted Partey at 6, with an Ødegaard-like midfielder as one of the two 8s in midfield, and a connecting striker with two out-and-out wide forwards as the main goal threat. I was worried for a while that we kept playing the double pivot - which I think it has had its day, for now anyway - but I was always confident that Arteta was going to evolve the system and as a result move toward the sort of high level, modern, superstar football we're now starting to see.

Anyway, the most important thing is Arteta has a plan and he will know exactly what he needs in the summer to move closer to realising it (regardless of what happens in the rest of this season). A manager with that clear vision is absolutely imperative to building a great team. Very, very content with everything right now. 🙂

I don't think we have the wide players, or at least they aren't far along enough in their development, or aren't favoured by Arteta, to play with a striker like that. We need someone who can bag plenty of goals as well as help the wide forwards. TBF it shouldn't be that hard to upgrade on Laca and Eddie.

Well, yeah, a connecting striker that also scores is what I want, and exactly what Arteta has also said he wants. I'm sure he'll get the best fit available in the summer.

Well you said the wide forwards as the main goal threat so I guess my disagreement is that I don't think they should currently be the main goal threat and that the CF should be the one carrying that burden until ESR and Saka start scoring Salah and Mane numbers.

I think you have to back them to do it though. And to be fair, they're in a rapid upward trajectory in terms of goals. Between Saka, Martinelli and ESR you're probably going to end up with 30 odd league goals.

Agreed. I would back Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli and a new wide forward (in place of Pépé) to get 40-50 goals next season.

That said, if the next Thierry Henry is out there...

I think someone mobile with a good touch and finish is more important at CF than someone just because of their goal scoring stats.

Our AM all look like they all have goals in them which is pretty amazing so a creator will definitely work. Don't think it is that much to ask for someone to be competent at both.

Yeah but thats where most of our goals come from at the moment and its not enough. We need another 20-25 goals in a season to get competitive and thats without factoring in the CL.

Well conservatively speaking you could probably bank on those guys plus Odegaard to add another 10 between them. Then you just need a striker who can score a bit more than 3...

If we're deploying two 8s as we have been recently then I'd also like whoever we buy in central midfield to be able to contribute with and handful - certainly more than granit.

Except I don't think he did say that.

IIRC he said the first priority for the new CF is to score goals and provide a goal threat, followed by having the right profile (to fit in with the team), and then having the commitment to work for the team. As such IMO he wants a goal scoring CF who can also link, but goal scoring is the first and foremost consideration.

And before anyone brings up the recent departure of PEA, I don't think Arteta wants a player who is only effective when playing off the last man looking for space in behind.

I mean, it's not exactly controversial to think Arteta wants a striker who can do it all. Who wouldn't?

The right player will create both by holding up the ball (at feet, aerially) and releasing to our runners, and by being a major threat so that the other players in the side have space to move into.

Especially if we're playing the single pivot, off the ball movement should be about as important as direct involvement. The difference for a strong contender would be occupying defenders without having to drag them fifty yards from the box.

Was immense today and has been for all of 2022. Still gives the ball away too often for my liking though! Do that against Liverpool and we will get punished ffs.

Anyway he’s been much better this year than the bang average/poor displays of 2020 and 2021.
