IMO his improvement coincides with the changes to our midfield shape with him as the lone #6.
The missing piece is having a genuine B2B type who can get up and down to support either Partey or Odegaard as needs be, and who can play as a ball carrier on the ball.

Agree Anzac. He has that little bit more time on the ball and facing fwd more which is things he has struggled with while here. Needs to be consistent now

I was actually thinking about our links with Neves during the second half yesterday. Like, we kind of want that guy, but just look at the 15 levels between him and Partey.

Boss man doing boss things in that midfield is our Partey. Looking sharp and healthy. Our players all seem to be coming into good form at a pretty perfect time.

It's one game, Ricky.

Neves was much better than Xhaka in that game, and he'd be more likely to replace him than Partey if he came here. This season on the whole he's arguably been a level above Partey too. He's consistently good whereas Partey has been inconsistently good and Xhaka has been consistently shit. Not much more to it than that.

Agree that Partey was magnificent in this game though. We need to stop wasting his best years and get him a proper midfield partner.

Yeah I didn't want Neves in the summer because he'd been really average the season before. Looked like a big talent and then stagnated, but now this season he's impressive again. Though to be fair when I didn't want him I didn't think the alternative was nobody.

If we went after the likes of Neves, or Phillips as suggest in the transfer section, then would you want them switching roles with Partey if keep the current midfield set up? Parteys been better than both lately and they're both more defensive than he is. Not sure I'd go for a player like that at this stage. I'd rather just leave Partey doing the great job he's doing and get someone like Tielemans.

Agreed. I'd like an 8 who can play as a 6 than vice versa. Would be good to get someone who can chip in with a few goals and assists too.

It's not just a matter of his partner, but also who can take over if he's injured. IMO we're currently way too reliant on Partey.

I think if we get CL theres a chance you could get AMN to take on that role. Especially if you made him the RB cover too. There would be plenty of games for him then and I think his energy and ability with the ball at feet would make him decent cover for Partey.

I'm still thinking we should get a physically capable double pivot happening. get someone like tchouameni in, and have the pair protect the back 4 and focus on launching counters from deep

How much protection does the back 4 need? We are already solid in defence, we need more going the other way.

I think we bring someone in who can help us dominate the midfield with the ball. Good passing game, good press, and good press resistance.

Being reliant on players is a good thing, if you have players you don't mind being injured then they're probably not good enough.

And if you want to reduce reliance on those players then the way to do it is the make sure the rest of your first XI are also that good.

We need to maintain effectiveness with both the single and double pivot as well as with a back five and back four. Might need all that in our locker, especially in Europe.

Generally speaking I think it's better to play a single system, but if need be it shouldn't be hard for an 8 to be able to play in a double pivot.

I agree. Especially if you want to be effective in the knockout rounds. We need to qualify first though, lets not count our chickens.
