I'm actually not surprised Aubameyang was moved like this.
Arteta has invested himself in Martinelli / Odegaard / Saka, and ESR, and has seen that those three play better when Lacazette is ahead of them. In Arteta's mind, the team is better off without Auba than with him, and based on Auba's recent form I think that's understandable (proof will be how we finish this year).
Edu likely sanctioned this move because they know how hard it would be to move Auba (on his current wages) if he went cold till the end of the season. Who is going to take on Auba's wages if he hasn't scored for months on end? Right now Edu jumped at Barca being desperate, and played up (publicly) the disciplinary concerns as a reason to move him (rather than his form).
As other's have called out - how we finish this season will be the ultimate test, and it will be magnified by the owners/Edu communication on if that matched their goals. But I think to really overcome this move, the summer transfers will also have to be massive. Making Europa (or somehow the CL) will not be enough if there isn't at least marquee signing early in the summer window and another closer to end of the window.
Well said.
The issue is how threadbare we have left the squad now. It is not strong for half a season of intense football, which also promises to have a pretty intense run in for the top 4, plus a very tight relegation battle which turns those “easy” games into all-out wars.
The strike force we have now is genuinely the worst we have had since the days of a broken down Smith and Kevin Campbell.
It is almost criminal, and part of being a manager is getting the best out of what you have got.
“Going to work means seeing people I hate, talking to people I can not stand, working with people I could not care less about”
This scorched earth policy of Arteta and Edu is simply unreal. We can't afford to behave in this way, and the result of this will cost us badly. Arteta needs to know how to bow his head at times, and incredibly the one player who actually swore at the fans and openly fawned over Mourinho, is still here!
Saliba will be next, and for me I would prevent any more damage to the squad. He and edu needs clear orders to work with what they have.
A person is judged on results, and we shall see what happens until the end of the season. A real shame what has transpired, as we have a great spine growing with Ramsdale, Gabriel, White, Partey, Tomiyasu etc
A midfielder and a striker was absolutely needed and we have failed, on top of which we let players go who could have won us a few more points.
We are definitely paying the price for “learning on the job”.
