Agreed, actually.

There was a bleak irony in this possibly falling through at the last minute, but the spectacle of trying to "reintegrate" him would've been awful, and shifting his contract out of our list of concerns this way is far better than some alternatives, like having to deal with the situation all over again in summer.

I'm sad that a player who's been a great servant of the club, got us an FA Cup, and has been a joyous spirit and scored goals aplenty has fallen out with our seemingly intransigent manager, but moving on quickly is good. I don't have a problem with the overall acceleration of change we're experiencing, even if the trajectory remains unclear.

I have no doubt if we fare poorly over the rest of the season this situation will be dissected again and again. Perhaps there will even be public statements from Auba about his treatment. But that's a lot better than Özil giving us the finger while off on holiday.

I'm curious as to why we feel obliged to tear up PEA's contractnow when he is not out of contract as yet, and we did not do so for Xhaka last summer. We just p*ssed 58m up against the wall.

Because of the degree of the personal rift between Arteta and Auba I'm guessing.

Both parties willing to terminate the contract because he was never going to play for Arteta again, meaning all parties would be in roughly the same position in summer, except Arsenal would be £7m and an ongoing controversy worse off, and Auba would've lost six months of his career.

Now that any conceivable embargo is lifted, I'd welcome Auba's brother spilling the beans on what the fuck happened. Did one question the other publicly? Surely this level of self-sabotage by Arteta can't be down to Auba's disciplinary conduct (one-off or serial).

He's gone, and I don't think we'll miss him as much as some might think. I don't think he's a good match stylistically or professionally in the current squad we have.

Saying that, and I do think it's a somewhat separate issue, it's a huge failing to go into the back end of the season with Lacazette and Nketiah. A failing which I think is more of planning and execution of previous windows.

On the other hand, I'm seeing a lot of love for the player of a few years ago which ignores recent lack of professionalism, poor form and of which much rests on hatred of Arteta as it does love of Aubameyang.

We talk as if retaining Aubameyang would be mean a return to a 20+ goal season run of form, when the scarce available evidence points to the contrary.

Lack of professionalism cuts both ways. You have an issue with someone you don't publicly strip them of their captaincy and burn them irrevocably as an asset then tell them there's no way back and terminate their contract, regardless of whether you think Auba was still worth his wages. This has happened with a bunch of players now, even not knowing what has went down there's 0% chance that this was the only way to deal with these issues.

He scored 7 goals in 15 games this season. He worked hard every time he played as well. Striker's go through dry spells, it happens, Lacazette hasn't scored in how long now? Yeah Auba was shit last season, but he's also on record saying he had personal problems and health issues that negatively impacted his game last year. Retaining him wouldn't mean a return to 20+ goal a season form most likely, but he's also the only player we had in the squad where that was even a slight possibility.

what's more sus is people that can find the bright side of any egg that arteta and edu lay, can't find anything positive to say about a player that's contrbuted meaningfully to the history of this club

It does and I largely agree with you. I'm not a fan of how Arteta has handled this.

But that's all beside the point. Gazza's comment was on the general feeling towards Aubameyang.

I don't think ones feelings on Aubameyang need to be dependent on their view of Arteta, and vice versa. And if they are, I don't think that person's opinion is worth much if they can't isolate the issues.

Strikers go through dry spells and they also decline through age. They also suit some systems and not others. He has recent personal problems and health issues. As widely reported, he either has heart lesions (most likely) or alternatively rumours suggest that might be a cover for disciplinary issues (extremely unlikely), and we don't know what the impact on either of those scenarios might be on his form.

Yeah, we don't know, and we never will at this point. My point is that even with all those issues, Auba was still the guy most likely to go on a goalscoring streak in the squad. He'd probably score more with a broken leg than a fit Lacazette at this point.

I've made it clear what I think about Arteta's handling of this situation, but even leaving all my personal problems with him aside, giving Auba away for free without getting a replacement in just isn't what's best for the team's chances of qualifying for the Champions League. Had we gotten Isak or Vlahovic, things would be different, but we didn't, and now our best goalscorers in the squad are two kids, one of whom doesn't even start at this point.

There is a lot of naivety from Arteta, Edu and Josh on how this was handled. Even if Arteta was finished with Auba he shouldn't have reacted like this, you keep him sweet until you have his replacement more or less secured and then you push him out the door. What you don't do is expel him from the squad and then start your quest for his replacement because guess what, top strikers aren't queueing up to join this "project".
