Ozil was in great form when he signed. The dip was so severe and immediate it's unreal though.

Ozil had a history of flakiness which made his renewal a risk even though he was in decent form at the time. Auba has been doing serious business for 5+ years straight without injuries. Thats what sets them apart in my mind

He was well into his slide from the heights of 15/16. His trajectory has been downward since then, it just accelerated after he signed that deal. At that stage he was still useful but was firmly in the rarely does it away or against the top 6 stage of things.

It's also sad when you watch back season reviews or many important matches he is rare in the highs influencing the game, especially in many important matches. Pretty much a flat track bully and assist paddler against small clubs.

I think my favorite part of his Arsenal career was the moment he just signed till the fateful match against Bayern which really fully exposed what kind of player he is. Ever since that meltdown everyone knew he can't be depended on, but at least he was still useful enough when he bothered in home matches especially after Alexis joined and carried the team in 14/15. After his new deal I can only remember 1 outstanding match against Leicester. Really an extreme waste of talent if a footballer's mental state is crap

Also gives me a measure of confidence in Arteta and how he handles the squad.

Question - have we always had the same amount of social media involvement from the players or is this a more recent development?

We’ve had a fair amount. Players like AMN, Bellerin etc are quite active. O think this stands out because it’s so monumental and such a big production as well. It’s like Lebron’s decision without the hubris.

I mean, social media has been a thing for like two seconds. Hard to say that anything has 'always' been this way.

A better way to ask the question perhaps -- 'Have we always had such strong player and fan interaction?'

Social media has become an uneblieveable channel for connecting fans and players. But previously, there was certainly a strong connection between local lads like Adams, Parlour, etc. with the community.
