Must be hard for him. He’ll be entering next season with a mental battle that he knows it’ll be tough to hold his previous levels. Time to start phasing him out.

You play Vardy on the wing and he'll give you a similar performance or return.

Don't understand Arteta's persistence with Lacazette up-front.

He'll press for about 30-40 minutes but then he's done.

Sorry to say Giroud at 35 or whatever looks quite better than Lacazette.

We don't really learn from our mistakes. He's another player whose deal winds down as we get probably a poor fee.

Nketiah, Lacazette, Elneny etc. all down to their last year of contract.

It’s time for Edu to make a big decision. The entire Aubameyang era has been one of the most painful things for me to watch as an Arsenal fan. We splurged on one of the great 9s of our generation and decided to use him as mainly a left winger during most his time here across 3 managers. It’s upsetting. And emblematic of what a basket case we are

But he isn't any better when he plays up top. At his best he's attacki g the space between the CB and FB. Same as Henry and Salah. That wide forward evolution we see everywhere was a Wenger master stroke. To this league at least.

He’s actually had a 0,7 xgp90 this year before yesterday. A lot of that was driven by games where he was playing at the top like Leeds and Olympiakos. That is a crazy xG, btw, completely outlying. The reason he was able to get that is simple. As a 9, he has more opportunities to get into dangerous goal scoring positions, his superpower. It’s as simple as that. He’s not a superior finisher. He is just exceptional at sniffing out chances

Auba was playing as a LWB, of course he's going to look like shit. He's got a very specific but world class talent, and that's getting at the end of and scoring chances, yet he spent more time in our defensive third than the opposition third. Play Lewandowski in the same position yesterday and I guarantee he looks like garbage too.

Spot on, when you look at other strikers entering his age bracket they aren't being asked to play on the wing it's madness. It seems to be to accommodate lacazette but he is so limited you get very little benefit from him playing.

Yep he has to play up top. Once you give him the new contract on huge money you should be going all in on him, not putting him out wide cos you don't want to offend him by dropping him. And what did Laca do yesterday? Its not like he's in such blistering form that you have to play him. They're both playing at a similar level but Auba has higher levels, just play him into form.

I don't think arteta is unaware of that fact, at least I hope not. auba on the left was a necessary evil with ESR and saka being out, otherwise you're looking at willian getting minutes

He played him on the wing against West Ham too though when we didn't have all these injuries.

I don’t know if this ridiculous idea of captaincy is getting in the way of team selection. We should just make the goalie captain going forward (and hope we have the right one).

It's not the captaincy, it's just Arteta who doesn't like the kind of football where players are facing the right way. We can't play like that because the buildup doesn't happen in midfield for us, it happens in the defence. Conceding so much space against an opponent makes it easy to cut off the supply lines. When you get pressed like we did by Liverpool you end up with two shit wingbacks instead of capable wide forwards.

People say we miss Luiz's distribution in a game like the one yesterday, but it's the fact that we're entirely reliant on his terrible balls over the top to create vertical movement that is the issue here. Smith-Rowe and Saka were both missing yesterday and I'm sure they would have made some difference, maybe Ødegaard wouldn't have been completely marked out of the game if they had been there, but the problem runs deeper than that. This is not the first time we have struggled to create anything this season.

That’s true but the last few games we had been much better creating vertical build up, with balls flowing through Partey and Odegaard and then back out to the wings. Several things went wrong yesterday

Ceballos just didn’t have Xhaka’s distribution.
Luiz was missed. He gives us more dynamism in moving the ball up because he can run with the ball, launch it and exchange with the mids.
Chambers was often 20 yards too deep once Odegaard got the ball, denying the outlet pass that he often presented vs West Ham. This was partially due to Mané pushing him back
Tierney also found himself pressed back very early on.

So it was a combination of selection / availability issues, and also Liverpool jumping on us early. And it just cascaded.

Its annoying that we allowed that to cascade as you say. We often go out and are the better team for 20 minutes or so but when you don't score most PL teams will find a way to get back into the game. We couldn't manage that at all yesterday.
