One of them is left outside the squad altogether. Other guys like Saka, Smith-Rowe and Nelson can all unlock a defence, even Pepe. They've not been getting many chances this season though, or in Saka's case in an attacking capacity.

Yeah the formation has been a big issue. It's why I was happy when we first switched to a 4-2-3-1, because it was clear to me it was the long term solution to our issues.

I'm not sure about having half a dozen solutions, but Willian on the right and Auba on the left with Laca up top in a 3-4-3 definitely didn't include any.

Na, he gets put through and never has the power or pace to make anything of it so players stop looking for it. Partly was playing him through and he was easily getting out tusseled by bigger stronger faster defenders.

Feels like there's a handful of users on here who've been waiting for 2.5 years for Auba to stop scoring so they can finally join Sicario in trashing him.

The problem I’ve always had with him is when he doesn’t score he offers little. Look at his assist record compared to some of his peers. It’s poor. He rarely influences games when he’s not putting the ball in the back of the net. Also, he should never made captain, not alpha enough personality. Hides at times.

Hopefully he will pick up form this season and gets his goal scoring boots back.

Yes. With that forward line and Xhaka and Elneny/Ceballos in midfield you've basically wasted the 5 non-defending positions in the team on uncreative players, which only leaves your fullbacks available to make anything happen; usually in the form of crossing. Xhaka and Elneny aren't going to be creative (although they are capable of progressing the ball, which is not quite the same thing) and Ceballos is a bit weak and too slow to play further up while he also struggles to assert himself in a deeper role. I don't know just how much of it that is down to mentality and how much is sheer physical limitations, but he doesn't seem to be the solution to many problems.

I do think that Partey is going to be massively important for us in the long run, and it's unfortunate that his season has been chopped to pieces so far. In the few games he has played you could see him passing the ball forward to put our forwards in dangerous positions and I agree with what you said previously in another thread: I don't want him in a holding role either. I think he's too good at this kind of stuff to limit his application to defensive work. The way he played against United is how I want him to play regularly for us.

We could both pick out tons of examples, Grelish is still young enough that he may feel it's worth developing his game and getting that big move at the right time, right time also being when he'll get monster wages. He's not taking a step down hes developing.

Partey is probably the best paid defensive midfielder on the planet, soyes it was a risk signing him for that reason. He massivley fooked us pottering off the field versus spurs without calling for another player to cover his position, He wouldnt have done that shit at real or athletico. He's got bags of talent and looks purpose built for the league I think He'll do well. But he has "sold out" to take a step down so the risk is larger than it should be.

Look at these big signings ManU have made and catagorise them as successes and failures and a lot of the Big names fall in the failure catagory like pogba and the sucesses have taken a step up to go there like Bruno. Its the same for us if you map them all out.

dog piling on granit is overkill at this point, but he's probably missed many dozens of those passes over the years. while he's carrying the ball forward, he can't set himself or make the necessary body adjustment to pick out those runs. in order for him to play a killer ball, all the conditions have to be perfect I.e. standing still, run can't be too sudden, going down wind etc. cesc or even Santi see that gap and are ready to ping it before auba even makes his move

It's killing our strikers and their movement off the ball. Xhaka has been doing this forever and I recall the same comments being made in game by the TV pundits and post game analysis by Wrighty with Xhaka not picking up Laca's movement ahead of the ball when he first joined us.

not sure about that, he's been on the left forward role often enough.

if lacazette, pepe, willian et al were doing their job from the start of the season the spotlight in auba would've been alleviated. at least laca is coming good now

Yesterday Aubameyang hit goal number 300 in his career. That's amazing for any player, more so for a guy that spent a long part of his playing days on the wings. Lets hope he is back and now and keeps banging them in

He might not have to under the elite athlete exception, but I don't remember the details.

I read that Ødegaard will be available for the United game because of that elite athlete exception so the same will probably be true for Auba. As long as they don't skip out on any of the regular testing they should be good to go.
