Re-signing Auba was a reasonable decision even if may not be optimal. That's all you can ask for.
It was fine.
If your calculation was I can invest £54m in Aubameyang’s wages and by the time his contract is up, I will have replaced him with Martinelli, then it is fine.
There is, however, a world where you can justify an alternative. We paid Aubameyang £54m for 3 years and maybe chose to forego about £40m in transfer fees by not selling him. So that’s a £90-95m opportunity cost.
Victor Osimhen went for upto £72m transfer and about £25m in a 5 year contract. That’s a £97m cost all in for 5 years.
So for the Aubameyang opportunity cost, we could’ve signed Osimhen. In additon, Osimhen would have residual value.
The one reason why these moves consistently make sense for Arsenal is because we are desperate for relevance. And men like Aubameyang give us that. If we are comfortable with doing a fast reset and rebuilding the squad against a clear squad plan then a move like the Osimhen one makes sense. The question is who do we want to be?
