So when are we going to get concerned about this guy? He's been obviously below par since he got paid. What do we do now? Eat it? Just getting the Ozil millstone off our necks and then we strap Auba's right on.

Doesn't look sharp enough and engaged enough. Tries hard but everything is slightly slower than last season. Needs goals, even tap ins.

Pretty much a standard Auba performance bar the lack of killer instinct in front of goal. Thought he was decent, worked hard too.

But our fans love a crisis. Remember when we were being relegated?

Nah, he's genuinely been below par. Probably not an effort issue, but suffering from the dire football and lack of chances created the past 2-3 months.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

Better when he moved back to the left wing, although I do cringe seeing him literally blocking crosses from the opposing right back.

he's lost a yard of pace, rarely see defenders 'stay beat' when he goes past, tends to get reeled back and jostled off the ball. could be the general lack of enthusiasm or a bit of physical decline kicking in. he has played a tonne of football in the last 6 years

I thought the same thing, but he's never really beaten players for pace anyway since joining us. I actually think he's been leaning a bit too much on trying to use his pace to carry the ball in recent weeks rather than just focus on keeping the ball and playing it. He's not playing his natural game at the moment, everything is a little forced.

I'm not sure if he's lost a yard of pace or if he's just lost a bit of his edge. His 2nd goal against City in the cup semi and the run he made to win the penalty in the final against Chelsea were just under 6 months ago. It's the first time he's been in a goal scoring rut in years and we haven't been playing to his strengths at all once teams figured out to cede possession to us and to watch for the long ball over the top to Auba.

It’s a bit troubling that our most expensive asset a bit one dimensional AND we haven’t done everything on our power to enhance that one dimension

It made sense to sell him, as I said at the time. Its rarely a good idea to sign players who are doing you a favour by signing(I've used this phrase a ton of times and been laughed at evertime but its heald true far more often than not).
Currently he's often terrible for us. He doesn't look interested in 50:50s and he's never the protagonist in an attacking sense so he makes that side flat. When he's not scoring he's a hinderence to the team.

We can't allow it to become an Ozil situation. We need to get him firing again, we know he can do it. Its just a case a properly managing our asset.

Auba is 31.

Partey was a win win. He is 27. He was significantly undervalued and underpaid in Spain, and we desperately needed someone with his skill set in his position.

Auba is 31. His only elite attribute is his finishing which he hasn’t displayed in 4 months. He needs someone to create for him - he doesn’t make his own chances. And we signed him on like we were signing a prime Thierry Henry. It was clearly a dumb move. I understand the pressure the club and Arteta were under, but this is where you need a strong willed person in Edu’s role. Someone with their own vision. Identify his successor, sell him off, bring in the replacement, young, hungry, who will be here for their peak in 4-5 years, developing and can be sold off for big profit if we want to at the time. This is the model smart teams who don’t have the luxury of super daddies use. Must use.

Anyway, here we are.

Whilst what you're suggesting is sound logically, I'm not honestly sure we could have found an affordable replacement for Auba in the COVID summer window. And I think Arteta/Edu knew that.

I'm talking about the principle Speedy has used tons of times according to himself that you shouldn't sign players who are doing you a favor by signing. More often than not the players who are doing you a favor by signing will be younger because young players are more attractive to buy for other clubs.

You're talking about Auba's age. That's not what I was responding to at all.

Possibly, but then you keep your powder dry don’t you? and do your best to clearly explain your decision to fans, with the knowledge that they’re going to bay for blood. Sacrifice a Gunnersaurus or an Ozil to appease them or something. Ultimately, as long as the management team and ownership are on the same page and have a sound strategy, it doesn’t matter what the fans say or think. Thank you for your interest in our affairs. These are not easy decisions by any means, but that’s what leadership is about.

Would we be faring worse without Auba in the side today? Very unlikely.
