He grabs necks for sure. He is much more likely to lose possession in a dangerous area, make an inane tackle, concede an unnecessary free kick than drive through the midfield and make a difference.
Hashtag leadership. One of the mysteries with this guy is why he's so well-liked in the dressing room versus the time bomb quality.
I don't see the contract extension as a total disaster—I can't see the point—but it would be great if he could now put together a consistent season.
I wonder if that will be tested following his comments at the ECs?
I'd imagine a few 'old school' types would be wanting to have a private conversation out behind the changing sheds.
I can't imagine how his presence after his comments can NOT have as much a detrimental impact as any of the likes of Ozil, Mustafi, Kolasinac hanging around last season. Not just in regards to the players but also in terms of the credibility of both Arteta and Edu, and I'd rate that at higher value just on principle and potential impacts to the season than the 5m difference to have Xhaka off the books.
IMO if Xhaka stays Arteta abd Edu lose any credibility and it conforms for me that KSE & AFC is all about the money and not the football.
As long as Xhaka remains part of the match day squad our midfield will remain unbalanced in ANY 2 CM configuration, and is only likely to work if we change to a midfield V with a ball winner/screening DM at the base (Bissouma?), and then play Xhaka and Partey in the #8 roles going forward to support the front 3. That said IMO Xhaka is simply not worth the effort as he is basically not suited to the 'needs' of a CM in the EPL.
Xhaka is the ultimate poster boy for AW's square peg signings, and is the reason why our midfield is both unbalanced and not fit for purpose in terms of our play and service to the forwards.
