What seems nuts is the idea that we can go into the season without upgrading in midfield and expecting a significant improvement. The less number of matches will certainly help but it's still insane and yes I am very aware about the Christmas till end of season convenient table.

Anyhow, I can somehow digest Xhaka staying if we make a big upgrade in the frontline. As limiting as Xhaka is, he isn't alone responsible for our toothlessness in attack. But the new contract is just not understandable.

Aye we needed new CB, FB, CM, AM, CF, GK. We bought a very talented CB and CM. I'm not even sure xhaka is in charge of our transfer policy you know. I don't think theirs any point in fans spitting more venom at him than the other players.

I think at a point you have to start questioning his leadership and professionalism too though. First the Palace match then he pretty much burnt his bridges at the start of the window, or he would have at a normal club. Coming out saying the rest of the team weren't good enough, how much he admires Mourinho, etc Can't believe he gets away with that, if he was good I wouldn't mind so much but he's bang average at best.

The dressing room viewing Xhaka as a leader is more indicative of them. You have to wonder if Xhaka would have the respect of Vieira, Henry, Keown, Campbell etc. Our players have mostly achieved very little in the game, their standards are probably quite low.

buck passers. aside from holding and Tierney, the experienced players in this squad are happy to watch and wait for others to shoulder responsibility. a squad with quality and character wouldn't view someone as erratic xhaka as a leader.

After all the fake positive news the club put out early in the window, anyone surprised we can't offload any of our cloggers who are on high wages and long contract that we gave them? We are stuck with them for years unless we write off again.

I never got the feeling we'd be stuck with him. Managers like him, players like him. It's only fans that don't like him.

Willian. . . we all had the feeling we'd be stuck with but the idea i presume was he'd hit the ground running and that would make up for it. If he was on reasonable wages he'd be in the US aswell. I really dont thnk theyre giving xhaka 250K a week that would keep him here for the remainder of his contract.

Xhaka is the poster boy for our regression since his arrival, and yet another square peg player that requires the team shape and selections to cover his flaws. IMO he was our single biggest issue in terms of performance impact in both before Christmas and again in the last month when we had a number of errors leading to goals conceded.

He's been our best midfielder for 4 years? partey is better now if/when he's fit. The lack of players good enough to surpass him is the issue rather then the man himself. I'm not sure xhaka is in charge of our transfer policy.

He was never the right player for the position or role in the first instance and was yet another compromise signing by AW.
Him supposedly being our better midfielder of the bunch is just smoke and mirrors regardless of our inept transfers.

Totally agree Qwiss, so often the stories are he's seen as a key leader. To me that's damning on the club and staff of the behaviour you have highlighted doesn't undermine that and rather they are far from leadership qualities and maybe that's why this club is a mess. Just makes me think we are in for years more of total mediocrity and anyone of any potential quality, like Saka, won't be here very long.

He was tired of taking the blame for everything. Even now after busting his chops all season, playing well, gave everything covered LB. Auba put his feet up and gave 30% effort and fans are still on xhakas case. He's saying it's not his fault it was a shit season and he's correct.

If Xhaka was half as good as you claim he is we'd be able to get someone to cough up more than £12m for him.

Shudder to think what kind of names Speedy would have called Auba if he had behaved like Xhaka did as a captain or put in performances that were as dodgy over the past three years.
