Yeah in hindsight it's obvious that Xhaka's camp was using Roma's interest to get him better terms at Arsenal. He never really wanted to go there. We one-upped their wage offer and probably added a year or two to the extension we had in mind.

As annoying as this might be, it isn't as disgustingly terrible as many are making it out to be.

He's turning 29 and just came off a good Euro. He seems to be liked within the squad and brings some leadership and experience. For 15 million euros (what Roma was offering), he's excellent value. There isn't anyone anywhere who could offer what he does for that money. We were looking at Neves who is basically the same player for twice the price. All others weren't really real.

This gives Sambi and others a chance to step in and take over through the year. It also doesn't stop us from signing another CAM to level the team. If anything, Elneny is the odd one out now. It also doesn't stop us from signing a CM to compete with him too.

Edit: Yeah, it was Bold Tone saying Xhaka couldn't play in a midfield 2 and that that wouldn't happen as long as Emery had his nudes looool.

I can see why the club wouldn't sell, if we are getting bullshit offers like £10m for him then whats the point in selling? Especially as every club know the PL teams have money so want top buck for their talent?

It is also hugely frustrating as we need someone better in his position. Hopefully we can still look to get someone in and move on El'Neny.

Makes a backwards sense doesn't it? The club may be able to scrape the same sort of price for him as has been offered in a couple of years.

The downside reasoning might be that he would be likely to agitate to leave if he stops being a starter—could end up being the only real benefit we could derive from his conflictual personality.

Seems nuts that people are so unhappy with xhaka staying. Partey is massively struggling with fitness and the other options are all a bit scary.

Holding, elneny, chambers, Mari are all more limited than xhaka. Yet fans are fine for them to stay.

xhaka isnt a good player, thats why i want him to leave.

i think people get too fixated on the fee paid for the player. once we agreed on the fee to buy him, that fee becomes a sunk cost. does it suck to spend £30m on a shit player and sell for £10m a few years later? sure. but that £30m should be out of sight, out of mind. he wasnt good for us this past season, or really much at all in his time here. hes cost us games and tons of points. if he were playing for some other english team and we were linked to him for £10m, would anyone here be excited about it? no. if roma offer £8m, we should take £8m.

Nobody is fine with Elneny staying what are you on about. The other options are all backups while people were hopeful that Xhaka would be upgraded on as the links early in the window were suggesting.

Md, it's simple. Arteta really really rates him. Arteta have always loved players who are top pro with great attitude in training and dressing room. No matter how limited or many mistakes he makes as long as he shown great attitude he's a keeper. On the contrary, if you have shit attitude you will be banished for good as shown many times.

He's viewed as a leader which is why so far he has been pretty indispensable despite all the mistakes last season.

@[deleted] I don’t know. I think the good attitude thing is mostly an excuse, he just has favorites. Xhaka gets away with The quotes about his team mates letting him down this season, but someone Like Auba would be unprofessional if he said it.
