Mikel Arteta tried hard to convince the players to a 12.5% pay cut at the beginning of the pandemic.
The players were promised NOBODY would lose their jobs and after 55 redundancies were pushed through yesterday the squad want answers and aren’t happy [@David_Ornstein].
Ozil was right not to take the cut?
He’s in no way obligated. But you have to look at the bigger picture.
In a normal organization that is losing its primary revenue source (match day income and associated commercial revenues), the first thing to go would be player expense. I actually think the player cuts were a smart request. All the pundits complained that they’re are small and meaningless, but in our context the £15 -20m saved there is a lot, and much more than the layoffs. Add to this probably reduced spending in the transfer market and I’m sure we will be spending £30-40m less than we would’ve under ideal circumstances.
I think that’s what it looks like overall. I’ve seen that Arsenal has 1100 to 1400 employees. So 55 employees is about 4%. My spouse’s company just went through downturn induced layoffs and that was 10%. Everybody is broken there. I doubt this is something the leaders did lightly.
