I didn't hate it that much @Claudius, it's actually vaguely comforting to find someone who disliked it more than me! But it was emotionally evacuated—weird thing to say about a comedy whodunnit.
At certain points this film asked me to get involved in what the characters were experiencing and I really couldn't give a shit. And when that happened I realised that Johnson hadn't done anything effective to make me give a shit. It reminded me of the epic failure of the romantic development in LA LA LAND.
Don't make a film about revenge without giving us something to hang onto.
THE GRAY MAN was pretty bad along the same lines. I do agree Netflix have a bit of a problem sticking the landing with these productions, they're good at pulling talent together and quite daring with their ideas, but … a lot of them suck for some reason.
The whole cinema release / streaming release dichotomy is a big problem, because even with today's large household screens, the way Lean shot LAWRENCE OF ARABIA just doesn't function at home.
