Asterix it was really quite something. I went with my wife, who is even less interested in saccharin musicals, because it was the only thing that matched with the timeframe available for her aunt to watch the baby over Thanksgiving. We tend to use her at least one night so we can see a movie over the fall break.

It blew me away, honestly. Excellent filmmaking, great art direction, solid performances, and excellent use of VFX. I loved it. Even my wife was impressed, and she's extra critical seeing as she's a film editor, animator, and trained VFX artist.

Claudius also, if you love the stage show, and I do too, wasn't it great seeing Kristin Chenowith and Idina Menzel in their cameo? There were a few others as well, including Stephen Schwarz who wrote the music, and Winnie Holzman who wrote the book for the stage show and the screenplays for both movies. There were a few other Glindas and Elphibas too apparently in the Oz street scene.

Asterix how did they stretch a 2 hour musical to 2 3 hour movies?

I didn't like the stage production when I went to it in the West End but I'm gonna bring my kids to the movie over the Xmas break. My daughters currently musical mad.

A musical flows pretty quickly - the dialogue never ends. Movies have lingering camera shots, extra dialogue and stuff to fill out the world, enhance the emotion and tension etc. So in a musical when they travel to Oz the sets change in about 5 seconds. In the movie there is a train station and shots of the train travelling through the countryside, approaching the city etc etc.

I like the way the story provides a different perspective to the characters from The Wizard of Oz. If your daughters haven't seen that it's worth watching it with them.

Asterix thanks for the nudge. This was such a splendid movie. Cynthia has such a powerful voice. It was charming, beautifully set, well cast. And it had a great tempo throughout. Definitely didn’t feel its length.

Heard differing things - one of my colleagues said that it was really good, but not sure how much I trust him.

I went to see Nosferatu a couple of weeks back. At the time, I thought it was beautifully shot, incredibly atmospheric, but not actually that scary and about 20 minutes too long, but fuck if I could stop thinking about it for like a week afterwards. I still don't really know what I thought of it, but I've come down on the side of "it's a great film". And actually, it was nice not to leave a Robert Eggers film feeling traumatised, as I did after The Lighthouse.

Saw Conclave over the break and really enjoyed it. Loved seeing the Sistine Chapel being used for the grand purpose of electing a Pope - even though it wasn't filmed there. The twist at the end is very well done. It's one of the few Robert Harris books I haven't read - must get around to it.

Just watched Axel F. Took a while to get used to the three amigos and Paul Reiser not quite sounding like they used to (and Judge Reinhold looked really weird), but we really enjoyed it. Nowhere near as good as the original, obviously, but much more fun than Beverly Hills Cop 2. Joe Gordon Levitt and Kevin Bacon were fun additions to the cast.

Wow. I hope it's nothing sinister. Admired him hugely as an actor, first saw him in MISSISSIPPI BURNING and it blew me away.

Baker is overdue, I enjoyed ANORA but it might even be his "worst" film. The previous films are very, very good. He's an attentive student of human behaviour and there's always a decent surprise or two.

Baker and his partner Samantha Quan have done all the "above the line" roles on several very detailed, observational features about unpleasant niches of contemporary American life.

For instance RED ROCKET (which is a great film by the way) is about a washed up porn star who hopes to revive his career by exploiting a frustrated teenage girl he encounters.

Pepe LeFrits following accounts isn't a crime against decency. If he shares the sentiment of accounts like Libs of Tiktok, that would be.

Also, being disappointed by people isn't trying to cancel them. That's typical right wing nonsense about cancel culture. People who think free speech means the right to speak without facing criticism.

Agreed, it is a dangerous path we are going down when we start judging people on the accounts they follow and smearing them on that basis.

Well … to put it another way, I don't think we get any good movies about kids getting exploited in the porn industry without willing filmmakers doing a lot of research and meeting a lot of porn stars.

World being what it is, I don't think you can rule out Baker being a creep. But he's been casting non-actors from the real life milieu of each of his works for a lot of years. That's what he does.

The lead actor of THE FLORIDA PROJECT, Bria Vinaite, was a former stripper who was cast based on an Instagram post and did a few weeks of acting training before the shoot, and so on. Ken Loach is an example of a director with a similar process.

I guess it's pretty gross following Libs Of TikTok or IDF Babes but … is it? I know a guy who has written several research papers on 4chan and 8chan, to support that work he's read infinite reams of Pepe the Frog and Kekistan memes, he's probably halfway to being a Nazi himself now.
