HIs career has been such an incredible disappointment to me. Dawn of the Dead was fucking fantastic. That montage in the beginning where Johnny Cash is singing The Man Comes Around from the other side of the grave, over images of a world going straight to hell... I watched the film in the theatre without any real expectations, and it was just mindblowingly good. I thought he would go on to do great things as a director.
Ever since then his movies have been various kinds of awful though. 300 was pretty good to I guess, more in terms of visuals and style than content I reckon, but it captured the storybook quality from Miller's comic very well. Everything else has been completely shit though. He got Watchmen wrong, he made the blandest Superman, he directed the worst Batman movie of all time (which is impressive when you're competing with Joel Schumacher), even an over the top project like Sucker Punch turned boring in his hands.
For someone who started out with a colourful, genre-reinventing movie with intelligent soundtrack choices he has turned genre conventions, washed out colours and greatest hit music into his trademarks instead, all while taking on the most thematically unambitious super hero projects and adaptations imaginable.
