Football memories and history is short. Legacy and recency live on. The legacy of Thierry Henry and the Invincibles for example is for me the biggest thing about Arsenal. Not the near invincibles, or the invincibles who didn't win the league. But even this will fade out eventually if we don't continue to pick up trophies. How many football fans remember today that Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest used to be huge teams in Europe?
Chelsea is the first London team to win the Champions league. They did it relatively recently. They did it twice. That gives them something we don't have, and desperately desire. European pedigree. They also most recently have won the Club World Cup, which we may deride as a dumb competition, but don't tell me we all weren't hoping for a PSG win. Imagine they had lost, and we won say the FA Cup last term and a Chelsea fan comes here telling us that reaching the club world cup final and losing to PSG is a better accomplishment. We'd laugh them straight out of town.
Trophy winning is what counts as accomplishments. And the more recent the trophy, the more prestigious (participation and financial incentives) the trophy, the bigger the accomplishment. How you got there is immaterial. You're there, youre in it so win it.
Can't believe you guys are making me post all this.
