Fair point. I think if you play him next to Partey you force Partey to sit though, and Arteta doesn't seem to want that (and neither do I). If I had a choice - and The Wishlist is all about pretending that I do! - I think I would go out and get someone a little more balanced perhaps to free up Partey's role. Someone who plays like Arteta himself used to do for us.

Bellerin, Chambers, Maitland-Niles, Guendouzi, Xhaka, Nketiah and Lacazette all also sold to raise funds.

There is no way we'll get that much high level business done in the summer.

I think we need to be very careful not to repeat Chelsea's mistakes too, even if we could. We owe it to ourselves to keep backing the emerging players now and our transfer business should be geared towards supporting them. I'd look for a starting midfielder and a backup striker, and hopefully Ødegaard will stay on permanently in which case I'd send Ceballos back. If not we might be an attacking player short.

I still think and hope that Maitland-Niles can be a big presence, whether in midfield or at rightback. If Ryan is willing to stay on I reckon that's our goalkeeping business sorted too. The rest is mostly about pruning the fringe positions. Get Luiz and Willian out, give more chances to Chambers, Saliba and Nelson. Torreira will have to go, maybe Guendouzi too. Mavropanos should be gone too. The rest I'd keep if possible.

The more I think about it the more I feel that our transfers in should be focused on Bissouma and Ødegaard, and a goalkeeper.

Bissouma and Odegaard is probably the multiplier.

Is the goalie the sub? Bring one in and loan out one of Hein / Okonkwo?

Yeah I meant a backup since Ryan is just on loan.

I watched Okonkwo and Hein a little for the U23 and I would honestly be shocked if either of them ever started as much as a Championship game, but I suppose it's mathematically possible that I caught them both on their worst days. I completely understand why we brought in a new third choice last summer. Even Runarsson is miles ahead of them.

One problem with both Bissouma and Ndidi is that, along with Partey, Auba and Pepe they’ll all go off to ACON next Jan and I’m not sure that’s not something I think we can really entertain.

Good point on AFCON Goon. Imagine a long run for both Partey and Bissouma if they’re you’re main midfielders. They could be out over a month.

I wish these Italians would move. This would make life much easier

Why is the Afcon back in January. J thought it was moved to the summer some years ago so as to not disrupt the domestic schedules. Have they gone back or is this just a one off next season?

Aaargh. CAF. And living in a continent that spans the entire length of the globe.
It was originally scheduled for June 2020. And then COVID happened so they had to postpone it. But before then, they had also decided to change it to a January date because the Cameroon weather in June was unsuitable. The next few cups are also west African so I imagine they will say the same thing.

So looking like it'll be back to how it was then. I thought they changed it full stop and not just for the upcoming Afcon. They should just hold all Afcons in South Africa in June/July during their winter season.

ideal summer for me:

sell a bunch of players who are either taking up space, nearing the end of their deals, or just dont fit here. id list laca, willian (no one will take him), chambers, luiz (is he out of contract? i forget), nketiah, and xhaka.
sort out the players on loan: id be looking to sell AMN, mav, willock, guendouzi, and torreira. i would not try to buy ceballos unless the price is less than £15m. id try to get odegaard's loan extended to a full season with an option to buy (or an obligation if under £35m)...id be fine with making the ryan signing permanent. hes only 28. hes a competent backup. im not sure what to do about saliba
buy a CM to partner partey. this should be the biggest outlay for us
buy a LB. preferably someone who isnt always injured and who is good going forward
buy a right footed CB who is in the 23-25 age range that is ready to step in and play on day 1 and partner him with gabriel
buy a RB and sell bellerin. im sure a team in spain would offer £12-15m for bellerin, i dont think hes on insane wages right now, is he? use that money, plus a bit extra if we need to, to bring in a solid RB who can offer something going forward and also defend. cedric is fine as a backup RB. he should never play LB again
buy a PL experienced center mid, doesnt need to be someone flashy, someone like moutinho. surely we can find someone in the £10-15m range that ticks a bunch of boxes. PL experienced so they can slot right in and play as backup to partey
buy a good under 19ish goalkeeping prospect, sign him to a 5 year deal, and then loan him out to a club that will make him their undisputed number 1. no developmental projects here in goal, let the player develop elsewhere and if hes good enough, bring him back in a few years.

So much so that The Sun report a ‘summer clear-out’ at the Emirates.

They will ‘listen to offers’ for Alexandre Lacazette as his contract expires in 2022 and they ‘are in no mood to give him a pay rise,’ but also don’t want to lose him for free. David Luiz ‘will probably be released’ (or not) when his deal runs its course at the end of the season. Sead Kolasinac will leave ‘for a nominal fee’. The club ‘may consider offers’ when it comes to Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson. And they expect to sell Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira for £25m each.

That is where the £50m comes from, although the actual figure if that nonet is sold would obviously be far greater. The plan is to reinvest it on permanent deals for Dani Ceballos, Mat Ryan and Martin Odegaard. Fair enough.

We absolutely need to maximise the value we extract from these four guys. We've made the right first step in loaning out Willock and AMN. Need similar arrangements for Nelson and Nketiah. If these four played for Liverpool, they'd be raking in 80m or more.
