I think he'll stay for another season to be honest, at least it would be a really bold move by Arteta to ditch him. Even I'm starting to think it might be better to replace him while he's still here rather than get rid and hope the new guy works out. Party's lack of availability, Thiago struggling at Liverpool have me clutching for the security blanket.

I’m not worried about Partey’s lack of availability. I just think no summer, late start and compressed schedule taught him a lesson. This is a hardy Ghana boy. These chaps are tough. 😆

The thing with this rebuilding process is you need to take leaps of faith. You need to let go of the security blanket and believe that your replacement will work out. That’s why this experimentation process of defining the system is important because then Arteta can give Edu a very accurate spec of what we need in CM. No more day trading players.

I just don't think Arteta is that kind of manager, I don't think he likes to take those kinds of risks. And unlike us, I think he likes Xhaka as a personality and partially as a player, so that's doubly a reason.

I don't mind personally, my only two conditions would be that he doesn't get a new deal and that our two starting central midfielders next season are Partey and someone else.

Xhaka is a big personality. He is not sticking around to be some superstar's understudy.

Agree, but as long as we sign Ceballos permanently too. Him and Partey could work well

That would work.
I don’t think we’ve seen anywhere near peak Ceballos. And with Partey could be a good pairing. Who would be the third midfielder? Elneny is a very precarious situation.

He was good against Leeds, but I think we need something better than Ceballos as a permanent solution. He's been here two seasons now and you can still count the quality performances on one hand. It feels like every good quality he has comes with a compromise somewhere else. Not that it's his main mission, but you never get any goal support from him in midfield either. I don't think he has broken his Premier League duck yet.

If we could keep him for cheap as 3rd mid would be ideal. And then get a better guy in.
Just worry about the budget. But could be feasible if we really sell the guys in other clubs, Laca and Xhaka.
I’m just not sure who that Partey2 is. We’ve mentioned Bissouma but his issue is if Partey is out, he is relatively limited. Ideally you want a 2 way mid in there.

That's why I want to see him with Partey as much as we can before the season is over - so we can make an informed decision. He hasn't really been given the chance consistently under Arteta and when he is playing I think he's better than the other options more often than not so I'm not really sure why.

I hear you but seriously I don't mind him as a stop gap measure if we need to splash our load on Hakimi and Odegaard etc.

Fair point. I think if you play him next to Partey you force Partey to sit though, and Arteta doesn't seem to want that (and neither do I). If I had a choice - and The Wishlist is all about pretending that I do! - I think I would go out and get someone a little more balanced perhaps to free up Partey's role. Someone who plays like Arteta himself used to do for us.

Conte tore him a new one a couple of months back for his defending.

I honestly don't see Hakimi working unless a team plays with back 5.

He is a much worse defender than even the likes of TAA.

I'm with mentalvortex, I can't see Hakimi work in the present team and I really don't want us to go back to fielding three centrebacks.

I wouldn’t want 3 CBs either. He seemed a decent enough defender in Germany (but that’s a slightly lower standard). I’ll need to watch a bit more of Inter. He started the season late so didn’t see him early on

Even Dortmund played with very much a 3 CB setup when Hakimi was working best for them.

Pisczek would play in a very withdrawn role as a right sided CB with Hakimi having little to no defensive duties.

Modern football has changed and there’s less emphasis on defending now as a full back. You look at the likes of Cancelo and Zinchenko for City and they’re all hardly good defenders. What Hakimi provides going forward far outweighs his defensive shortcomings.

While not perfect, I am okay with Bellerin and Cedric as our RB options. We should prioritise cover for Tierney on the other flank over any new RB.

Other than reserve LB, believe we need to concentrate on a new CF to replace Laca and a new CM to replace Xhaka, while hopefully making the Odegaard deal permanent. I wouldn't renew Ceballos for the £20m+ being quoted as think he is limited in a deeper midfield role.

At this stage, a very good summer for me would be something like:

Raya from Brentford (provided he is as good as is touted).

Hakimi from Inter. Worth the big bucks he'd cost. He can't defend for toffee, but neither can Bellerin. And in attack they're worlds apart.

Bertand from Southampton or van Aanholt from Palace on a free. Adequate cover for a season or two.

Bissouma from Brighton. Some much needed pace and athleticism in midfield, to help out Partey, and make us less reliant on his dominating on his own in every game.

Aouar from Lyon, if Ødegaard doesn't cut the mustard. I think the advantage with the Frenchman is that he is more a centre midfielder than a 10, and I think that'd be more useful moving forward.

I think we still need a wide player as well, depending on where Aubameyang is going to be played, and then what the plan is for Martinelli, because I'd sell Pépé. He's been pretty good recently, but I still think he doesn't fit in and won't flourish here.

Bellerin, Chambers, Maitland-Niles, Guendouzi, Xhaka, Nketiah and Lacazette all also sold to raise funds.
