Yeah, that's fair. People made these same comments about Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku and no one talks about these guys anymore. Where are they? Hopefully not sleeping under a bridge somewhere. Compare them to the likes of a global superstar like Hachim Mastour who rose to prominence based on his superior technical abilities.

In all seriousness, it's almost certainly true that being bigger, faster and stronger than everyone else when you're 12 years old probably counts for little. This is almost certainly not true for 15 year olds. 15 year old freak athletes are very likely to be 20 year old freak athletes and 25 year old freak athletes. I think people seem to underestimate how precisely this stuff can be determined by that point already.

Disagree. I remember watching Bendtner bully at U21 level with his size and power alone. The likes of JET and Barazite were the same. Most players are still delicate little flowers at that age and many won’t even make it as footballers at a decent level.

You only have to look at how fragile Patino, Bellerin, Wilshere and Nelson looked when they first put in some senior time.

Most of the goals in that clip he’s basically walking past them.

In developmental terms it's a disadvantage to have a pronounced advantage in many cases, holds you back if anything as there's not enough competition at your own level. It's very difficult for these specimens at top clubs nowadays. We get these 16 year olds with that freakish ability and accelerated development of size and strength, but then have nothing to do with them beyond the occasional "Ooh wook baby's twaining with the fiwst team squad" for five years … meanwhile Eddie Nketiah's blood-toil-tears-and-sweating it ahead of you.

Don't think many people were saying anything about Haaland until he started banging them in for RB Salsburg and he scored like 9 goals or something in a youth international game around that time. By then he was an 18 or 19 year old though, hardly a 10-15 youth player only playing against children. That same year he was playing CL football scoring crazy goals which gained him that crazy hype, and it just continued year after year.

To be clear, I have absolutely no strong feelings about Chido Obi at all. It just seems to me that when people see a super athletic kid, they're more likely to go "This kid will be found out at a higher level due to his technique" than they are to go "This kid will be found out at a higher level due to his athleticism " when they see a super technical kid despite the latter being at least just as likely as the former. Athletic superiority matters and can be predicted with at least equal accuracy as technical superiority when you get to mid teenage years. This point is just a personal pet peeve of mine.

goon You piqued my interest so I looked it up

Barazite is only 33 now, but without a club since 2020 after his last stint in Thailand.

JET is only 32 and last played in India last year, also without a club now.

Searched up the other few players of that golden youth team. Ozyakup had a very good career, 43 caps for Turkey and is playing in the Netherlands, Jon Toral playing in Greece, Chuks Aneke playing for Charlton in League 1 with a good goalscoring record and Luke Freeman just got released by Luton but otherwise decent career too

Clrnc Fascinating. I had these boys along the likes of Jose Baxter, Mamadou Sakho and Eden Hazard crowned multiple time champions on FIFA (11/12). In the end none of them won a legitimate english league title.
