Clrnc and we have 4 academy lads in the first team now… 5 if like me you’ve adopted Martinelli as a Hale End kid.

Will be interesting to see if he makes the League Cup squad this season. I always feel like the very best talents break through and get game time early.

Would love it we could see a return to fielding 2 or 3 of the best youngsters in the League Cup. Only if they're up to to it, of course. It used to be such fun seeing Carlos Vela chipping hattricks!

goon I have high hopes for him, but similarly in the past the hype for Zelalem who was really intelligent and classy on the ball didn't materialise. It's really quite hit and miss with regards to young talents.

Nwaneri's record is extremely good considering he's an attacking midfielder and constantly playing against players 2-5 years his senior. He got a hatrrick last week against Leicester U21s last week, so he's started well on that front this season. Some of his finishing is composed to the point of nonchalance.

Yeah, Zelalem and Azeez both lacked intensity. They never really grew out of playing games like it was youth level. You can be as talented as you like but how you deal with senior football is unpredictable. Good sign that Nwaneri is doing that against Swindon though.

I actually used to love the League Cup back then, loved that run to the final. And yeah, I have the look of Paddy Kenny etched into my memory 😆

We will likely see ESR and Vieira picking up the mins this season, but hopefully Ethan and one or two others can get mins off the bench. We should just leave the likes of Saka at home.

Tbh hadn't been that impressed with him previously (played in diff position?) but that video has got me a LOT more excited about him. His game looks really mature, very well rounded. Agree with @Segway Definitely giving me Wilshere vibes with his balance and vision. Hope we see a lot more of him this season.

Zelalem snapped his ACL at 19 or 20, he was never coming back from that. He also never had speed, outstanding balance or that low centre of gravity, though his technical ability and awareness was fantastic for his age.

I just think it's best not to generalise, or rule in or rule out a player making it on what's gone before. Try to look at what they speicfically have in terms of standout attributes and judge from there. Nwaneri has many, and they're rare.

I think our players need to choose their words carefully around Rio Ferdinand. A person known to go around tapping up youngsters to get them to move.

JazzG It was not on the Rio thing. He also said in the same interview that Partey is the best defensive midfielder he ever played with. Better then Rodri or Fernandinho.

Part of me wants us to use him to solve our defensive shortfall. It's riskier for sure but if we're serious about youth development we need to give serious consideration to pathways for our best talents.

HomeSteak Those kind of comments are fine but Rio works for some agents and is basically known to go around unsettling youngsters to get them to move. No doubt on some kickbacks out of it as well, supposedly one of the guys who had been in trying to get Nwaneri to leave us.

First I'm hearing of this. Any exmples of players he is known to have tapped up?

Like I said there are rumours, I'd need to dig through Twitter to see where I read it. Nwaneri is one such example I remember reading at the time. New Era is the company, Rio's brother and cousin are apart of that company as well.

goon I'm about worried that we currently don't really care about youth development much. We've seen a few young players leave who probably wouldn't have in previous years and its hard to blame them when there doesn't seem to be a route into the first team. You'd need to be a Saka/Foden level talent to break through now by the looks of things. And even then you'd have to be loaned out for multiple years and you'd need those loans to go very well.

Yeah, I don't mind the threshold being high, what I'm worried about is that even the Saka/Foden level talents don't get that chance. Quite often those talents only get there due to the development and exposure to the first team.

goon yeah I don't think Saka would get the same chances now that he did. Now Sakas extremely flexibility and giant football brain played a huge part in that. I reckon he'd be loaned out for years if he was coming through now though.

I also don't think its only Saka level players we should be bringing through. He's our best player and we need a whole squad. What about bringing through homegrown Havertz, Vieira, Trossard, etc Even Declan Rice probably couldn't come through here at the moment.

I guess we wont know for another while but I don't see anyone coming through in the near future and its not down to a lack up and coming talent.
