Other than keepers harshly declining and dropping clangers everywhere your latter scenario is basically the standard for keeper changes at big clubs though. You set a bad example if current performances are not rewarded, if you're on the bench for whatever reason it should be ensured you know it's possible to claim #1 for yourself by your own actions when you get the chance

IIRC Leno was criticised for some clangers in his 1st season with us based upon his not catching the ball and trying to push it away, which then went to opposition players who then scored. I also recall there being similar issues pre-COVID, but his saves have been spectacular. He has looked suspect in traffic under a high ball, whereas Martinez has been more effective in his control of the area and under the highball.

Thus far other than the incident v LFC I don't think Martinez has actually committed any GK errors, although his positioning was out in one instance where the ball hit the far post and rebounded to safety.

Leno may be the better shot stopper but Martinez seems to be more in being the style of GK to play out from the back in a possession based system. As such IMO that gives him the starting position until he is not good enough and/or Leno wins it back.

No, but this is the price we pay for finishing 8th on the league ladder and only qualifying for UEFA by winning a domestic Cup.
If we're short on funds then we cannot afford the luxury of having 2 starting quality GKs when neither are interested in being #2.

For what it's worth despite Martinez perhaps being the better fit in terms of Arteta's style he also represents the better potential in terms of profit from any sale, whereas Leno may have the better potential in terms of fee received.

Profit is entirely irrelevant. If they were both as good, and I'm not saying they are, then fee received is all that matters.

He’s looking at the accounting treatment.
Everything we get for Emi is straight profit since he’s nothing on the accounting books. For Leno, we would need to net out the remaining depreciated asset value. Leno has £15m net asset value remaining on the books as of this summer.

Any sane club would keep both of them this season and see how things shake out. What's the longterm status of Leno's knee? Can Martinez prove that he's a real keeper and not just a reserve who overperformed heavily for a while? Two important questions to find answers to.

Exactly. We might be selling the better keeper. It's incredibly stupid

They'll know his baseline from training. Its super easy to tell a players level from training as thr drills target specific areas so strengths and weaknesses are completely exposed. If he's generally mediocre but hit a rich vein of form then it's worth selling him while his stock is up.

Chamack, senderos, flamini, coq even djorou and almunia all had spells of good form. They know thd guys level if his stock is above that then it time to shift.

Leno has been excellent since we’ve signed him, he’s not going to fuck up now and Martinez is unlikely to win his place, there simply isn’t enough between them. If the kid wants to go to get first team football good on him, we may as well cash in while he’s got some respect to his name.

You guys keep saying stuff like this but that would put him among the top 8 most expensive goalkeepers of all time. For a guy who prior to the last couple of months has spent a decade being a backup and unsuccessful loans.

I would sell for less than 15 though, just not worth it.

That top 10 list has lots of old moves. You see with new moves that big teams really value a good goalkeeper. There are a lot of desperate teams. We have one of the 8 most expensive goalkeepers, which feels right given Leno’s performances (£25m). And given that Martinez has run Leno close this season, I don’t think we should be selling him for a fraction, especially when the better goalies are going for 3x Leno’s price.

We have to start respecting ourselves. Or nobody else will.

Either way you’re still talking about in unprecedented amount for a goalkeeper of his profile. If Madrid or Chelsea want to sign him as they’re no.1 then by all means demand £30m+. If we’re talking about a mid table Spanish club though, then it’s not going to happen.

We can respect ourselves and sit here with a bunch of players we don’t want with no money to reinvest. We finished 8th in our worst season in over 2 decades and yet somehow we’re valuing all our of backups at 20m plus. Something doesn’t add up.
