Who should be our Number 1 next season?

Can't remember the last time we had 2 truly top-class goalkeepers. Seaman and Manninger?

Tough one for Arteta to decide on, but I'm leaning towards Emi at the moment.

Leno is a better shot-stopper but Martinez has certain skills that he is superior at.

Hard to say if this is a purple patch for Emi but he does deserve to get a run in the team.

Oh, one more thing if this is really Martinez's real level is that I don't think he'd want to go if a bigger club came knocking. Really seems to care a lot about Arsenal.

I think the only way to keep both at the club is to keep Leno in the league 1st team and play Martinez for all cups, the way we're doing now. Switch them around and I think Leno is gone.

FWIW I think Emi if he maintains this run is the superior keeper.

Leno's better for me. Performed consistently and I feel calmer with him there. Moments like Martinez almost letting liverpool score off a clearance count against him when the competition is this stuff.

Was reading that Leno is perhaps the better shot stopper 1v1, but Martinez is the better fit for Arteta's system in that he's better with the ball at feet and he catches the ball rather than punching it, which also favors a possession based style.

As many have said, a lot of it depends on whether Emi can keep this level. Leno has been arguably our best and most important player for a year and a half (only Auba comes close), so I think selling Leno now as some are advocating would be a mistake. The question is who starts next year as no. 1 in the league. I was a huge fan of Leno and devastated when he got injured, thinking it was the end of our season, so it's a huge credit to Martinez what he has done. The awareness and confidence of handling that ball on the line (not sure about the judgment!) shows he has a real X-factor about him. I'd start him and see if he can keep it up, and see how Leno reacts. If they both continue to perform at the same level, we can sell one of them next year.

People always complain about our lack of depth, for once we have a proper pleasant problem. Last difficult GK decision was Almunia or Fabianski, just saying...

Martinez has clearly earned the right to start the next season as the No. 1. It would be very harsh otherwise. Leno should wait for an opportunity or show a cosmic level in cup matches in order to recover his place in the starting XI.

Usually, for a GK to be replaced amid a season something big has to happen. See the case of Kepa for example. The guy was real sh*t and still he stayed as first GK for a long time.

I think Leno has a better floor, in that Martinez still makes errors, but Martinez to me has a higher ceiling due to his all around play (kicking, ability in the air, etc.). Also, I've never got the feeling that Leno was in sync with his CB's, seems he's more of a shot stopper than a marshall.

For me, I think you have to let Martinez start the season, but Arteta should be honest with him and let him know Leno will be the (long term) #1 if he doesn't maintain his form. From there Martinez can decide if Cup games are enough, or if he wants to move on.

In general I think the incumbent should be rewarded for good form. That's consistent management that indicates to the whole squad that performance matters.

That said I don't think there's a clear answer to this question in relation to Leno and Martinez. There's no discrepancy between their ability that couldn't be outweighed by matters of form and experience overall, not to mention how much Martinez has done at the club in terms of waiting patiently for this opportunity.

From a fan's perspective that means Martinez starting the new season, but if pre-season form or any other issue dictates otherwise so be it. Definitely in the good problem to have basket.

I think if we transfer list either of them, we're making a mistake.

I think we should play it cool and see if a big offer comes in. If it doesn't, there's no decision to make.

I'd shop one if it meant signing a Partey / established started in our starting XI. It's risky, but we really need a lot of players to compete again that it would be worth it.

Its not that big a threat is it, he wants more game time, he doesn't demand to be number 1. I think he's earned the cups at least.

Emi is probably the best thing that happened to us this year. Very, very good news.
But Leno is still the better keeper, and so only one way to vote here (despite really loving Martinez!)

People who vote Leno, don't you even think Martinez should get the chance to lose his place? No matter who's been best this season it isn't by much. Martinez should at least start the season as first choice unless it's obvious in training that Leno is better.

No, I think Leno should get the chance to retain his place after everything he's done over the last two years. It's harsh on Martinez but it would be even harsher on Leno to drop him.

If Emi is the real deal and not just enjoying a few good months of form it'll reveal itself quickly in training, but you can't help but suspect that it's probably going to be the latter. I think he'll prove to be much better than people previously gave him credit for, but also a fair bit worse than Leno in the long run.

Sounds like Leno is struggling to get back to full health, so we might need to look for another goalie and start the season with both. Might only need to take this decision in December.
