Meh, maybe we did miss out on him but I'm not a huge fan of this sort of thinking. There's dozens of players we've missed out on that we (and others across Europe) could have signed on the cheap. I mean forget Fabinho we could have signed 80% of the Liverpool first XI at some stage or another.

This will always be the case. If we get our own deals right, it won't matter.

It matters now because those years have been costly in two ways. First we lost time not building a coherent team. Second, we now have all these players who either have no resale value because they’re old or we can’t shift because they’re not very good. It was a catastrophic period that has set Mikel and Edu back significantly. This shit matters. Imagine in your own company if you spent years hiring nothing but louts. It would take forever to undo the damage.

That's true. We absolutely showed no ambitions in the market under Wenger. Never ever have the urgency to always improve the team. Far too cautious in the market.

And our scouts reccomendations were unheeded

It was said at the time, what the club and Wenger were doing would put us back for years.

Those last three years of his period and Emery were god awful.

This is why thee DoF or someone with that mindset is crucial. We lacked a longterm integrator.

Atletico aren’t interested in selling the guy. Let’s get our Torreira money, sign Aouar and get our season going. It’s like if Barca had come sniffing for Aubameyang. We’d have told them to eat shit.

It is extremely unlikely that we would get Partey out of any Torreira sale alone this summer. What we needed was to sell a couple of players like Torreira and Guendouzi AND for Atletico to agree to sell him outside the buyout clause so we could match the cash flows of all the deals. The Partey deal was always a massive reach where Atletico had massive leverage relative to us.

I'm not sure how any (non oil/state backed) club could afford an up front fee of £50m+ right now. Every club is hurting from the financial impact of COVID, uncertain of future earnings, and struggling to shift players.

Pretty much. This is for guys like Guardiola who can toss half a billion on defenders.

So would Jorginho be our alternative to Partey? Seem like quite different players but willing to defer to someone who has more insight.

My point being, if we're really not going for Partey now, it seems odd that we've not been linked to an alternative.

Yeah, but then we may as well keep Torreira as cover? Somehow we've come into the window lacking quality in midfield and ending it by lacking quality and quantity.
