lol, I actually wouldn't know how bad or good it is as I stopped reading it after a month or two. It seemed decent at first with a few in depth articles but some of them were ridiculously long and I don't really feel like spending half my day reading about what gunnerblog has to say about Saliba even if it has a couple of good insights. But at least stuff like that is on the right track when it comes to what a subscription service should offer.

Stories like this are what really kill it, who wants to pay to read tabloid click bait trash?

They've a big hoo ha about shit every few weeks. Its obvious they are under pressure to put out big stories that bring big click throughs and sign ups. The reason people trusted the likes of Lawrence and Ornstrein is because they didn't do that when they were at the Guardian and the BBC. Once or twice a year Ornstein gave Arseblogger some inside stuff but now he's got much more lurid stuff almost all the time.

They have basically staffed up their operation with hundreds of journalists who are tasked with exclusives for specific teams. These journalists do not cover games. Just in-depth work. That puts a big burden on coming up with good, high quality material. I wonder if they need to consider a model where journalists cover multiple teams

Maybe the whole idea was always going to end up like this no matter what? The Guardian doesn't need a constant stream of Arsenal news to survive, the BBC doesn't care at all. Even the likes of John Cross don't have to pump out as much shit and Amy and Orny have been since they moved to the Athletic. Other companies like the Athletic are failing too and they were better established. They'll be gone in a year or two.

The luiz exit rumours were squashed quickly. You always know you've got dead weight when agents squash transfer rumours within 24 hours. Its always makes me chuckle when ozils agent comes out every summer to reassure us that his client is definitely not leaving, with the slightest hint of menace in his tone

The Mirror reporting earlier today we are laying off many scouts, sounds absolutely ridiculous if true. Are we just gonna let Raul's 'contacts' dictate our transfer dealings? So many good players more in the sub £20m bracket even now yet we never seem to be there. I am growing more and more uncomfortable with Raul, I'll admit after the Pepe transfer I was impressed but since then I am growing suspicious about his close links to certain agents.

Why the fuck have we laid them off after getting the squad to agree to a 15% pay cut, something which no other PL club has managed AFAIK.

Some talk that it's mostly scouts monitoring players below 16, which will become much more difficult because of Brexit.

It’s probably just a case of not renewing their contracts until later on in the year when football starts again fully. No points having scouts if their isn’t anything to scout.

Its really our ability to make money from sales thats fucked us over. If we had sold Sanchez and Ozil when they wouldn't sign new deals we would have been way better off. Everyone signs a few Xhaka and Mustafi level duds but we make it an issue because we can't afford to have mistakes like that.

Yeah. Even if you put Ozil aside (I supported the big deal at the time so I can't really complain now), we had offers totaling £100m for Ramsey and Sanchez which could have gone a long way. In fact if we spent that right we could have gotten back into the top four sooner, so who knows how much those decisions have really cost us.

I'm speculating but maybe they're just not necessary for modern scouting methods?

By all accounts it seems like analytics and agents are enough to identify the best young players, at which point you probably just need a few trusted specialised people, i.e. the head of recruitment and a couple of deputies, to make the final assessment.

I think you have to look at all those things together. If you just look at the exits, it looks like a series of unfortunate events where we were unable to convince players to stay. If you include the incomings and retentions, you see a picture of a team propelling itself forward on little more than the power of its farts.
