Is the issue of racism in football getting better, worse or basically staying the same? What precipitated this? Eddie isn’t even playing. How is this related to football? Maybe we don’t get to totally eradicate it from society, but surely there must be a way for the perpetrators to be punished for their actions and statements online.

And it's nothing new either. Xhaka, Mustafi and Pepe have been racially abused for years online, and many times even worse if you see some of the comments on Mustafi's social media.

Generally speaking at the top 4-6 clubs certain fans start coming out of the woodwork with their racist shit when they need a scapegoat for bad results but there are other clubs who are much worse who feel more like those Italian clubs. You saw some of those protests with the taking the knee that happened at some clubs, as well as the shit that Chelsea fans come up with outside the context of any game. It's disgusting.

We are nowhere near as bad as the worst but just like most other clubs, we have some fans who come up with some vile shit safe in the knowledge that they are anonymous. I hope they identify those 16 supposed season ticket holders who were racially abusing players on twitter and ban them from ever attending a game again.

He's getting a lot of abuse from little cunts who want him out of the club because they think that's gonna put Balogun in a better position to get playing time. It's been like this all season, even after games where he scored winning goals. He's had to deactivate comments on his instagram several times.

Yeah, banning means little. Racist behaviour online on social media needs to have same consequences as racist behaviour in the real world. It shouldn't just end at public shaming either. Unlike a racist act in person where no one else in possibly witness, the entire world sees this. It needs to cost them their job and needs to have an impact on their life. This has to end somehow. It's vile and disgusting.

These little shits take pride in making into the headlines, trolls haven't changed and never will. The only solution is to rip their anonymity off, fine them and then implement barriers between them and their target so that they're starved of attention. The only people with the power to do that directly are the social media platforms.

It's a start but remember that the internet is global too - the evening sports news doesn't have the same reach and indeed some may even delight in seeing themselves on there.

There are too many humans in the world that can talk shit online and not get punished. Even if 1% of your fans are racist that's a huge ton of them and huge problem.

I can only imagine the players need to ignore the trolls and not give them attention is the way to go. The more racist things is reported in media it might make those attention seeking racist happy and continue to abuse while hiding behind ip addresses

I don't think you know the answer to that definitively any more than I do. He has barely played, but he came on tonight in a game when we were total shit and made a big impact.

He was pretty awful though on the wing. Literally can't do much other than passing it back and losing possession most of the time. It's not his fault he is played out of position and still created those 2 chances, but you can't tell me Pepe wouldn't have done better.
