That's like saying don't let so called gourmets tell you that you shouldn't be eating McDonalds.

If McDonalds was a restaurant that scored well with food critics that'd be a really good comparison. You obviously know stuff, but I do get the feeling like you're the Burnwinter of audio. 😆 (No offense, BW).

A "second" rise in cases is happening in Vietnam and Singapore. Both countries had a fantastic initial response which lead to a few weeks of static (no growth in) cases. Will be curious what led to the 2nd wave, and if they're as effective in suppressing it.

Restriction should continue ‘most of a year’
Policies to limit the spread of coronavirus would need to be in place for "at least most of a year" to prevent intensive care units being overwhelmed, according to official scientific advice to the government.

The documents, prepared by the UK's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said alternating between more and less strict measures could "plausibly be effective at keeping the number of critical care cases within capacity".

I'm already starting to crack - I don't think I can take a year of this

I've resigned myself to a long haul. I think it'll ease up slightly in 3 months or so but it'll be a long time until things get back to normal completely

I would dread this. WHO unregulated pathogen development, hotter summer climates, modified population behavior such as choice mobility and better sanitation practices hopefully take us back to containment and elimination states for the winter. The current economic pressures are just not sustainable.

Tl;dr:

The UK government has always said it is relying on scientific advice to fight the pandemic, and the documents released on Friday (see our earlier entries) reveal the internal discussions of the scientists themselves.

One disagreement was over when to close schools. One of the documents spells out how different models came up with very different results for how much closures would reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Some said it would bring a reduction of between 20-60% while another suggested it would be 7.5-30%.

Other insights include the age for people to be considered at risk. The government’s advice is aimed at over 70 - but behind the scenes scientists have been discussing a threshold of 65.

And it’s clear that in developing the advice, there is a pessimistic view of how the British public will respond.

It’s assumed that only 50% of households will abide by the request to self-isolate if one member shows symptoms of the virus and that even this “may be unachievable”.

The scientists and the Home Office explored whether the measures would lead to public unrest but this was judged unlikely.

My understanding is the water in Venice hasn't actually improved in quality, but rather it's settled (due to less traffic) and in turn is clearer. It's not really cleaner after only a few weeks of quarantine.

I'm sure there's been noticeable improvements in air quality, trash making its way to oceans, and hopefully a reduction in meat consumption. But I doubt these will last long after isolation slows.

This whole thing is frustrating. Some friends and I wanted to buy soap bars and soap holders to distribute to people back home but a friend in public health told us it could be counterproductive. Access to wet wipes and liquid soap is limited and expensive, plus the former pollute. So if you guys have seen good, affordable ideas to help with cleanliness in low resource situations please holler. It’s sad to see how the limited access to sanitizer and wipes has led to price gouging, with these often going for 5-10x regular price now. And people are still buying.

Yep, absolutely nothing we can do but hang in there.
I'm envisaging that as time goes by there will be some interesting and creative ideas on how to get people out and socialising at a distance.

I've gone full on old school and I'm listening to radio most of the day, I find it more sociable and relaxing, more real and community orientated for some reason. I turn it off around now though when the "news" shows come on.

Makes sense. That was always going to be temporary. Will be interesting to see virus patterns in China for the rest of the year. Hopefully, they can keep it to a minimum

Agreed.

We're getting our first spring days here, and I was thinking of biking to a big field and meeting friends for a beer. Everyone bikes, brings their own beers, and stays ₆ feet apart. Can't see much harm with that.

Also trying to commit to a full weekend with no TV, internet or phone (aside from texts/calls). I need to stop painfully following every detail of this.
