Switch out Coutinho for Partey and I can live with Willian.
yeah. the problem is Coutinho solves the 8/10 question and Partey doesn't. Ceballos can try but he's more of an Iwobi type link man there when we want little bit dynamism
Was reading that Arteta has said he wants all 3 of Willian, Coutinho and Partey in order to switch to his preferred 433 shape and roles.
If true then it makes sense to go for the likes of Willian and Coutinho who are both proven in that shape. Further to that it also means the current progress of our youngsters is in a different style/shape, and they may need time to re-adjust.
There is the consideration of Willian and Coutinho knowing each other from time together in the national team, and being familiar with each other's style to be able to provide an effective combination. Also Willian can not only play off either flank, but he can also cover at #10.
Have also read comments signing older players as being a sign the longer term focus is on the current group of youngsters eventually taking over from these signings. We don't want younger players as not only do they cost more but they can also be an either/or situation regarding the developing group and see players wanting to depart and/or running their contracts down.
If so then our transfer business is still being impacted by the previous failure to buy a balanced squad in terms of age coverage. One thing I'd hope is that this time we have a legitimate plan in terms of both age and individual targets.
