The thing to remember is if you're suggesting someone like Saliba is replaceable it's under the assumption that someone definitively better is coming in. In reality the profile of player we're likely to get in to replace people like Saliba (or Tierney), are unlikely to offer any more assurance so the whole exercise is a bit pointless and it's not how you build a squad.

What you do is identify which areas offer the greatest scope to improve, for me that's clearly central midfield right now.

Out of that team the biggest potential / spine should come from Saliba - Saka - Guendouzi - Martinelli surround them with a couple of genuine world class players like Umtiti, Partey, Auba, Leno, Pepe and a few good young players like Tierney, Torreira and a few others, then use the academy to fill up the squad with the likes of AMN, Nketiah, Willock, Nelson, TJJ, Balogun etc

Fair enough, I think Leno - Saliba - Douzi - Martinelli could be a great set of players for years to come. Jury is out on Douzi, but I think he has the personality and a lot of the game right to be central to the rebuild.

Do you see Douzi lower or higher in the central midfield? And where do you see him spiking in terms of his capabilities - passing, advancing with the ball, marking, tackling?

I'd take Thiago for free, bloody hell. Give him a one-year deal with an option for another year and it won't even matter if he flops. He's so criminally underrated outside of Italy and France where people recognise him as one of the very best of his generation. You can't turn that down. It's worth the risk. It's probably worth it just for the benefit of having young players training for an entire year with someone of such incredible class. You guys had your Sideshow Bob this season. I get my Thiago Silva next one. It's only fair.

He’s still one of the best defenders in the world even at 35, but he’s 35. I just hate that it would fit into this pattern of old hires. If he was a one off I would leap at it. I hate the pattern. His numbers and performances are still off the Richter though. He’s the Ibra of defense.

I don't think I have ever seen a foreign imported defender at 35 that is a positive buy for any PL clubs. Don't think his body can adapt to this league at this age.

silva, saliba, mari, new guy, chambers as a utility CB/RCB/RB

Plus what he could bring on the mentoring side would be invaluable.

Get him and another younger CB in alongside Saliba

Silva is better then any of our defenders, no doubt. A lot better. But by the time next seasons starts he will be 36. Probably gonna ask for huge wages, don't think he will take a 1 year deal...so yeah, no go.

Yes, we could expect the kind of preformances we saw from Ferdinand at QPR and Terry at Villa. An absolute shit show. And that's after he adapts to the league, and remember at that age hes going to be picking up injuries all the time. And whoever plays with him will have to make up for his lack of acceleration/ agility aswell as doing their own job.

I think peoples romantic love for football is maybe clouding their judgment on this one.
